I might look silly but this makes us happy

Since last weekend we have had all these bottles returned

It’s such a simple sustainability initiative, and something they do throughout the c***r making regions of France and Spain

We inspect, sanitise and then they are ready for another use. These heavy duty bottles can go through dozens of iterations

Recycling is good, but it does mean these perfect bottles get broken down and melted.

When you get a Rull, rinse it, set it aside and bring it back to us when you come to an event here, or at a market.

I would love to get it to 30 bottles every week! That would be close to 2 tonne that we take out the system ( roughly 2000kgs of CO2!)

A full interactive c***r and perry tasting and making experience

Full board accommodation at the beautiful Regency House Ashley Court.

Friday night - c***r tasting experience! A full tutored tasting

Saturday - picking at Rull, with guided information on our trees and ethos.

Then we are going to give the old heritage press its first work out. Apples pressed through straw with this hundred plus year old twin screw press

Saturday evening - c***r paired feast night

Sunday - a pickling and preserving session

Friday was Feast Night

Several times a year we co-host an evening where we pair our brilliant c***rs and perries with some of Devon’s best restaurants

And on Friday we went out to High Grange near Axminster.

Under the canopy experience with incredible fire cooked food, each course paired to enhance the experience

The pictures tell the story. But Ive popped a picture of the menu in there so you can see for yourself

Believe me when I say these things are brilliant

Rull goes up to the perry heartlands near Malvern and brings back 2! Silvers

The Only Perry Championships in the World with entries coming from all over including Europe!

And considering how rare perry trees are in Devon we are truly honoured

With new Orchards comes new Opportunities

This is Rosette. A beautiful red fleshed apple that presses to a deep carmine juice

This year the apple harvest is poor. We are having to travel to new orchards and work with new apple varities

Which is hard work, but equally quite exciting

We have discovered a few of these red fleshed apples - Bradninch black, Devonshire Crimson Queen, Bloody Turk

And we on the lookout for “Surprise” which has a dull greenish yellow skin hiding a pink flesh. It may be one of the first descendants of “Niedzwetzkyana” - the wild apple from the Tian Shan mountains

I’ve never seen anything like it

In all the years I have been making c***r - as a hobby and then when we started commercially, the sugars this year are the highest we have ever seen. By far!

The picture shows a hydrometer - it shows the bouyancy of a liquid - the more sugar the more buoyant, allowing a measurement of the final Abv.

Normally early season desert fruit has a reading of around 44-48.

This year it’s 66!

That could be 8.9% alcohol.

And more than that. Although the juice tastes very sweet there’s a good balance of acidity too.

It’s going to be wild to see how these ferments end up.

Here’s the truth.

Normally I approach harvest with absolute glee. The thought of getting back out to the orchards, picking in the late summer sunshine, finding new varieties, and filling tanks with juice mean I can’t wait for mid September

However this year I have been dreading it. On our recon missions the trees have looked bare, the fruits have looked small and Ive known how hard the next few months will be

Yesterday we started. Thankfully Claire was there as my motivation was low. And my fears were pretty much on point.

But by the afternoon I had perked up. We’ve uncovered a few new perry trees which always feel special.

We will be pressing today so I’ll let you know about yields, flavours and sugars.

Don’t forget our next c***r Feast at High Grange on 25th September. Voted best fine dining in Devon in 2024 this is the last opportunity to dine here before they move on.
