Early on this week we prayed to the rain gods!

And today they have delivered.

I think sadly a little late for our Early fruit - apple Varities like Katy, sops on wine and Morgan sweet are tiny this year. Maybe less than half the size they should be

But this rain should assist the late ripening fruits.

We will have to work very hard this harvest as apple yields across orchards looks very poor.

We will make a Full Rull, but it’s going to be a tiny batch as I doubt there is more than a few crates across the whole orchard.

Also - Don’t forget our next feast night is at the brilliant High Grange, Devon on 25th September.

Our next two cider paired FEAST nights.

FRIDAY 25th September. Perhaps the last ever fire supper at High Grange, Axminster, East Devon. Devon’s best fine dining experience of 2024 is an outside under the canopy, fire cooked extravaganza. Expect canapés and sharing platters of incredible food coupled with different ciders and perries.

SATURDAY 7th November. The beautiful Regency Country House of Ashley Court, Tiverton feels like you are travelling back in time. Chef Gerald Pospischil worked at the Michelin star restaurant Lara in Vienna, and will curate an incredible vegan dining experience. All drinks included.

We normally take our most exciting and small batch drinks to these things and try to push the boundaries. If you haven’t yet seen how cider pairs beautifully with food then now is the time

Early august is about hay making

We have been working through the orchard scything around the trees in the traditional manner

I try and do about 25m2 to 30m2 every evening. I like the gentle focus and rthymical movement.

If you can leave cutting it late then wildflowers have a better chance to set seed

It’s been very dry, which for this particular operation is quite good, as wet weather can cause the tall grass to collapse called “lodging” and then that’s very hard with the scythe

We have been feeding the meadow grass to these hungry pigs. They love it

Two interesting things about this photo

1) The Sky. Bright scarlet and getting lighter before it got darker. Very cool.

2) The size of the apples this year. Worrying. We actually thinned a lot of the smaller fruits off our trees this week.

It’s been so dry for so long that we have been watering our younger trees, but it’s hard to do that effectively when you have hundreds.

The trees themselves still seem healthy enough but the fruits just haven’t grown.

I am worried it’s going to be a very poor harvest this year. Especially after the ‘mast’ year last year when apples were in abundance.

Orchid seeds are the tiniest seeds on the world and inside each pod is thousands of them

But they are so small they lack any food source to germinate and rely on soil fungi in a symbiotic relationship to grow.

They are so rare and always feel very special when we see them

Trying to get this mornings activities into one photo

We have started scything last week and are making progress. At first we like to cut paths through the orchard. It looks nice but also gives little insects, especially butterflies, shelter and feed sources.

The yellow rattle has dried and as we cut it naturally spreads.

Also the early plums are just about ready. The variety is Opal and in our opinion beats other plums for juiciness and flavour.

In amongst all the different fruits and nuts we have planted, this one is a beauty

The White mulberry.

Delicious soft fruits that taste of melon, straight from the tree

And here’s something interesting - when it releases pollen it’s uses its stamen as a catapult, to fire the pollen out at half the speed of sound
