Little bit of needed rain this afternoon makes it a habitat building session

Claire’s built this beautiful barn owl box, a little bat box and some new bird boxes.

We will get them up in the trees soon, and although we have probably missed this season it allows them to weather in and be spotted for next year

We have had a barn owl fly across the orchard twice. It’s such a precious and rare bird - it feels very special when it visits us

If you have ever holidayed in Normandy you will recognise the flavours. Aromas of autumn they call the “sous-boi”. Under the wood, or more prosaically the orchard floor

This pours an almost terracotta colour. A graduated natural orange. An ambre ombré if you will.

Theres something about making this drink that always feels like we are starting out on a mission.

We roughly know where we are going, and how it’s going to shape up, but often we get drawn to different orchards or different apple varieties.

And because its wild ferment there is always jeopardy.

Often we feel like it’s just getting out of control, before settling as the weather cools, and we somehow escape from danger.

Even with the sweetness the velvety feel and powerful fruit give it a sophisticated flavour profile.

The 2026 feels like the Daniel Craig of Normandy styles. Its full bodied. The tannins are firm and muscular and rise out of the liquid. Its stylish. Its Debbonaire.

If you haven’t yet seen The Detectorists then you must.

It’s a beautifully told story of friendships, a glorious look at the countryside and an appreciation of doing something you love.

It’s set in late British summer, often in that golden hour light, as two friends meet up to scan the earth slowly for treasure. Lance explains it best as he digs up a Tizer ringpull – “You see, we are time travellers”.

It reminds me of me and Claire. Perhaps we go treasure hunting a month of two later in the year, but when we visit some of the old orchards it does feel like we have skipped a hundred years backwards.

We feel anchored with this sense of time and place. There are connections to the land and previous generations – picking apples from the same trees in exactly the same way they would have.

And I love the shows gentle story telling speed. So many things are rushed now. In our world apple throughput seems what the big makers want to show off about. How much and how fast.

But what about if we just slow things down a little.

Devon Heritage Blend is pressed through straw overnight and aged in soft clean wooden barrels.

“Soft” is the word we hear. But layered and complex. The aroma is gentle and golden. The best I can offer you is sat in the meadow after the summer cut, when the grass has turned yellow and there’s a warm breeze. I know there is wood there but it’s so soft and clean that it’s offering just vanilla.

And on the taste ‘soft’ is the word. A tiny bit of residual sugar, the most gentle of apple tang, and then a rolling long finish. Just moorish.

Big shout out to guest chef Max of Max & Mike's Street Food for their incredible 4.5 course menu last night.

Held in the new Rull ‘Banquet Hall’ we paired a range of ciders and perries with each course.

The next one is 25th September. Venue will be announced shortly - it’s very exciting.

If this looks like the sort of thing you would enjoy keep an eye out.
