Nationwide delivery & beautiful shop to visit in Bideford, North Devon

31/08/2026

Dear Mary Portas

You know a good few of us Butchers Row shop keeps are very excited for to come and talk about her book

A person more dedicated to the understanding, promotion, joy and obstacles of independent retail life would be hard to find.

A very inspirational lady to me without doubt and I can’t wait for her talk at the festival.

But if you do see this Mary, we would love to see you at our beautiful Butchers Row in nearby to Appledore, Bideford.

The battle to keep independents thriving here is as hard as nearly everywhere else I’d say, but we have some great stories to tell and products to share. And throw into the mix the history behind our market place shops and its extra special I reckon.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed and this card will be winging its way to you - or an address I hope it finds you at - with the same invitation very soon.

Thank you for all your wisdom.

Time to turn

This long weekend is definitely serving some season changing vibes.

Sunday is a happy day of cooking for me nearly always but with a nip in the air a new feeling came in. Soup.

Now hopefully our salad days are not over just yet but I don’t mind soup making an occasional nod towards Autumn to come.

As I lie under a blanket watching a movie, with a good big bowl of my mums recipe minestrone I’m not mad at all about the rain outside - it actually feels rather lovely.

I also have a big notebook by my side sketching out tasting notes and cooking scheduling for the feast two weeks today. It’s nearly here - woo hoo!

Bank holiday flavour & popping up

Yes it’s raining, yes that’s sad and yes we know it’s needed but I guess… we should have known it was coming. British Bank Holidays and rain are like tea & toast - just got together!

I’ve had some scrummy products come in and I can reveal - one of these items will be involved in the Larder end of Summer feast on Sep 13th. No I won’t say which one but given they are all incredible any would be a dream ingredient.

Four tickets remaining - let’s get them booked up, it’s the long weekend after payday for most - when better 😀 link on post or in bio.

Two weeks to go. I’m very very excited - the little extra touches folks will enjoy keep on coming through business local & national getting involved. Squeak!

I’m open today - come say hello ❤️

Labels

The price kind not the personality stamping kind 😂

I have never been good at price labels.

Two reasons for that - just not keeping up with the task being one, and the other - never quite finding label solution that looks in keeping with our brand.

When people come in the Larder it’s not like going to a supermarket and that’s for sooooo many reasons but a big important factor is that it should feel experiential.

Time to look around and be inspired by the yummy products I hope. And having the right labels feeds into that as if I stick post its around, for example- not a good caring look.

But I have always admired this library style bronzed shelf labels - perhaps from my days working as a librarian as a student. It also means that when products move around or change you can just quickly slip a new label in - happy days.

It’s not perfect but nor indeed is anything -apart from my Larder of products of course 😂

Happy rainy Thursday. Winding my way back to Devon from Oxfordshire this morning carrying some precious cargo for the feast - exciting!

Olivier, portraits & Feast news ❤️

Thinking of my darling, naughty shop pup Olivier as I’m away from him in London a couple of days. I am super soppy on how much I miss him.

It brings me incredible joy that he is a highlight of the exclusive Butchers Row print we stock created by the oh so talented Devon local Clare Willcocks

BUT there’s more to this artist’s talents if you can believe it, a live portraits service for events.
Capturing guests in beautiful portraits - a perfect keepsake.

I am delighted to announce and feel so lucky she will be on hand for our feast event this September offering portraits for guests to remember the day by.

Check out some of her previous work Clare Willcocks the level of talent is just astounding.

All these elements coming together are keeping my face smiling. I continue to be blown away by people’s understanding of what this event is for and wish to collaborate on this event ❤️
It’s just as I hoped - like minded small business coming together for something truly lovely.

Four final tickets remaining for our Sep 13th event remain. Snap them up - it’s shaping up to be very special indeed😀

What to choose?

By far one of my favourite jobs as an independent food shop owner is discovering and stocking exciting & delicious brands. Some sparkling and new, others more established but sticking with our British made stamp.

And then finding them shelf bedfellows to compliment them - further fun afoot!

An almost accidental placement of blues and greens with a shelf shuffle this week. Very pleasing against my newly painted nails don’t you think 😀
