First year we've had to bottle feed a calf and we've had 2!! One mum didn't produce enough milk for some reason although she's well in herself and condition. The other had something the vet called photosensitisation. It's where the animal basically reacts to UV rays from the sun and makes their skin inflamed and sore, worse on their white patches. You don't really know they've got it until their nose is dry and the parts with white hair on look dry and raised.
We were thankful when the rain clouds finally came although we had already moved her inside.
She's now back out in a shadier field with her friend in the photo. Both of their calves run over for feeding time when they see us but I think her calf is now getting some milk off her mum as she only drank half a bottle of milk last time. :)

🌟 Spotlight on Local Producer 🌟

Raw Milk from High Naylor Farm, Oxenhope

This week, I’ve started buying raw milk after researching its potential benefits for gut health and its links to alleviating conditions like eczema and asthma in my family.

What is Raw Milk?

Raw milk is unpasteurised milk that comes straight from the cow. It retains all its natural enzymes, vitamins, and beneficial bacteria, which are often destroyed in the pasteurisation process.

In the UK:
β€’ Legal in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland: You can only buy raw milk directly from the farm.
β€’ Illegal in Scotland: It cannot be sold under any circumstances.
β€’ Supermarkets cannot stock it: You must purchase it directly from a certified producer.

Important: I’m not encouraging anyone to rush out and buy raw milk without thoroughly researching it first. There are risks associated with consuming unpasteurised milk, including potential exposure to harmful bacteria such as E. coli or salmonella. However, after considering these risks and consulting with my friend Meggan from Eldwick Graziers (whose family has enjoyed raw milk for years), I decided it was the right choice for us.

I also met the farmer Anthony Haigh at High Naylor and visited his farm. I was very reassured.

Meggan first introduced me to the idea when she used to make butter from raw cream sourced at High Naylor Farm.

Benefits of Raw Milk*
β€’ Supports gut health with natural probiotics.
β€’ Packed with enzymes that may aid digestion.
β€’ High in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).
β€’ Contains calcium and other vital minerals.
β€’ Linked anecdotally to improved skin and reduced allergies.

(*Note: Benefits are widely debated, and scientific evidence varies. Do your own research!)

What a beautiful day it was and such a relief of the thaw! These guys are in, been weaned from their mothers and are pretty happy with the B&B, waiting on them hand and foot! The land is getting wetter so the main lot might need to come in soon for a bit of respite (for the land and the pregnant cows!)

The Eldwick Graziers are coping fine in the snow. The cows are eating (and sleeping on) the haylage and they love their himalayan salt.πŸ„
The sheep are getting some hard feed as they are in lamb at this time of year and the haylage is for something dry in their bellies and to lay on too... who doesn't like a bit of comfort?πŸ‘
The pigs are fine, they get cosied down in their home, big Treacle (our breeding sow) makes sure she gets her spot firstπŸ˜…πŸ–
We also have a "free range" calf, Margot, at home. She gets out through the feed barrier, out of the shed, away from her mum and does as she pleases, then runs away skipping if you get closeπŸ˜† She jumps back in when she wants milk. One day she'll be too big to get back in!
