🥩 THE HUMBLE BUTCHER — MORE THAN JUST A JOB 🔪
There’s something quite special about the butcher’s trade.
It’s one of the oldest professions in the world, stretching back thousands of years. Long before supermarkets, plastic trays and barcodes, communities relied on their local butcher to prepare meat, understand every cut of the animal and make sure as little as possible went to waste.
And although the world has changed a lot since then… some parts of being a butcher really haven’t.
⏰ The early starts.
While most people are still tucked up in bed, the lights are already on in the butcher shop.
There are deliveries to unload, fridges to check, counters to fill and joints to cut before the first customer walks through the door.
💪 It’s physical work.
Carcasses, boxes and trays don't move themselves. There are long days spent on your feet, heavy lifting, cold mornings and plenty of aching backs and shoulders.
🔪 Then there’s the skill.
A butcher learns to understand an animal almost like a map.
Where each muscle sits. Which cuts need slow cooking and which deserve a hot pan. How to bone, trim, seam, roll, tie and portion. How to turn something that might otherwise be overlooked into a fantastic meal.
Those skills aren't learned overnight.
They come from years of standing beside experienced butchers, watching, listening, practising — and occasionally being told you've tied something completely wrong and need to start again! 😂
But butchery has always been about more than cutting meat.
❤️ It's about people.
We get to know our customers.
We hear about your Sunday dinners, BBQs, birthdays, Christmases and family get-togethers.
You ask us how much you'll need to feed eight people.
You ask us how long to cook your roast.
You tell us when that steak we recommended was the best you've had in years.
And sometimes you simply come in for a chat.
That's something a supermarket shelf can never replace.
Being a butcher means taking pride in your counter. It means caring about where your meat comes from, preparing it properly and wanting every customer to go home with something they're genuinely looking forward to cooking.
There are easier jobs.
There are warmer jobs.
There are certainly jobs with more sociable hours! 😂
But there's a reason people stay in this trade for decades.
We love it.
We love a beautifully prepared counter first thing in the morning.
We love creating something new and seeing customers come back for it.
We love passing knowledge down to the next generation.
And most importantly, we love being part of the community we serve.
So next time you visit your local butcher, remember there are years of knowledge, early mornings, heavy lifting, sharp knives, cold hands and a huge amount of pride sitting behind that counter.
And we wouldn't have it any other way. ❤️🔪🥩
