We’ve thought this for a long time.

Birkenhead waterfront has one of the most underused views in the UK.

That view across the Mersey to the Liverpool skyline is world-class — but we still haven’t fully grasped what the Wirral side could become.

What if Birkenhead had something genuinely bold?

A landmark building, cultural attraction or architectural statement as ambitious and controversial as Will Alsop’s proposed Cloud building could have been for Liverpool’s Pier Head.

Then imagine that linked with a regenerated Woodside, Argyle Street, Hamilton Square, a modern leisure tram running along the riverfront towards New Brighton, and even a reimagined New Brighton Tower for the 21st century.

Not just tidy regeneration.
Something with confidence.
Something that creates jobs, attracts visitors, supports independents, grows hospitality, and helps position Wirral as a proper leisure, culture and enterprise peninsula.

Thursdays StartYard Start-Up Event was a proper reminder that people are hungry for honest, practical support when it comes to starting a business.

The best feedback we heard?

That it was refreshing to get real insight from a mix of professionals, founders and experienced business owners — all in one room, all being honest about what it really takes.

Because let’s be honest…

Starting a business rarely feels smooth, polished or straightforward.

It’s usually messy.
Uncertain.
Stressful.
Full of wrong turns, problem-solving, persistence and backing yourself when nobody else quite gets it yet.

That’s why yesterday mattered.

No fluff. No fantasy. Just useful advice, real experiences and open conversation from people who’ve actually done it.

Big thanks to everyone who came, contributed and helped make it such a strong afternoon.

And a special thanks to all our panellists and speakers for being generous with their time, insight and honesty.

We’ll build on this.

🎨 Birkenhead After Dark — Exhibition at START-YARD 20th March 5pm - 9pm

We’re delighted to be part of Birkenhead’s After Dark art exhibition, and to be hosting a fantastic show from local artist Alan McAleavey here at START-YARD.

Alan’s work captures powerful moments of local life and landscape, and a collection of his limited edition prints will be on display and available to purchase on the night.

For visitors following the After Dark trail, both sides of START-YARD will be open so you can easily access the exhibition from Priory Street or Church Street.

If you’re starting your evening with us, parking will be available on Church Street, making it a great place to begin your journey exploring the other venues across Birkenhead.

Our ME&NU Café Bar will also be open throughout the evening — so feel free to stop in for a drink, take in the artwork, and enjoy the atmosphere before heading on to the rest of the trail.

We’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone for what should be a great night celebrating creativity across the town.

Wednesdays to Fridays 12pm to 4pm AND Saturdays & Sundays 10am to 4pm.

St Mary’s Tower (with spectacular views) is locked each day at 3.30pm.

FREE entry. (Cash donations accepted).

Free Guided Tours to bring our fascinating history to life. (Cash donations accepted).

GROUPS of 8+ requiring a Guided Tour need to prebook via [email protected].

(Schools, educational, walking, history groups requiring a guided tour can also prebook via the above email address).

Dogs on leads are welcome to all areas.

Picnic areas and lots of indoor spaces if the weather turns rainy again.

HOW lucky are we?

Photo below of the Undercroft (“medieval fridge”) at Birkenhead Priory by Samantha Higgins. Circa late 1200’s. This beautiful space now hosts the Priory Museum and displays many artefacts discovered on and around the site. In its original state.
