I’ve never connected with a star like I do with Ozzy Osbourne. Growing up I watched him on TV, knowing that if he could struggle at school and leave a council estate to follow his dreams, then anything was possible for a kid like me. He was a creative powerhouse, not afraid to be different and take risks. Not just his music, but with all elements of his life. Ozzy, The Prince of Darkness, was my biggest inspiration. That’s why my main course on Great British Menu had to be a tribute to him.

The word legend gets banded about too much, but he is; arguably the greatest Brummie ever. We all need heroes. Ozzy Osbourne is mine.

Anyone who has the tasting menu this weekend will get the ‘Shaaaarrrroonn’ course from Great British Menu on me. One week only, I’m bringing it back for my hero.

Digbeth. There was never going to be anywhere else for the restaurant. I’ve spent most of my adult life, way before the days when it was trendy, drinking on match days here before going to see the Blues, then back again after the match to celebrate or commiserate. It’s changed now in so many ways but the essence is still the same. It is the soul of Birmingham, The melting pot of its many communities. The heart of its creativity. And it’s where the custard is made. Of course we wanted to be where the custard is made.

Our style is made for Digbeth. We couldn’t play a mixture of grime, UB40, and ELO anywhere else. We’d look out of place in town and none of the suburbs would work. Here we feel appreciated for daring to be different. Actually, I take that back. Here we feel appreciated for just being Us. Our little restaurant that’s painted black with my kids artwork on the wall. A place that celebrates Birmingham, its history and its communities.
