NCASS (Nationwide Caterers Association)

NCASS (Nationwide Caterers Association) The UK's Trade Association for Caterers. Advice, law, & ways to trade safely, legally & profitably. We ask that everyone who uses this page respects that.
(1)

NCASS started out as MOCA, the Mobile & Outside Caterers Association in 1987 when a group of mobile caterers banded together to get a better deal for mobile catering businesses. Over time we developed tools and resources of value to all catering companies and to reflect that we became the Nationwide Caterers Association in 2005. We have been industry leaders in numerous fields, developing our own

Due Diligence systems to the principles HACCP long before Safer Food Better Business, the first online level 3 training course, the first online sustainability in catering course and much more, all delivered to members at the lowest possible cost. In October 2013 we entered into a government sanctioned Primary Authority Partnership with Cherwell District environmental health to develop 'assured advice and guidance' for our members and for use by environmental health & enforcement officers, covering all aspects of our business, but also to act as a conduit between industry and enforcement/government, developing best practice and industry knowledge. We were also asked to join the Business Expert Food Hygiene Group by the Better Regulatory Delivery Office (part of the Dept of Business Industry & Skills). The BEFHG meets with industry experts and government representatives to advise on the impact on business of food hygiene regulation and the practicalities of its implementation. We are able to raise issues for discussion as well as commenting on issues relating to our customers and industry. This forum is open for all to use, however, it's main focus is to enable easy access for our customers to raise issues with us and discuss the industry. For this reason we ask that non-members do not post adverts or promotions on this page as we will remove them. Our members pay their hard earned money to be part of the association and their needs are our priority. We couldn't do what we do without them, their feedback and support.

Every business has it's own story, challenges and ambitions"

Running an independent hospitality business takes dedication, resilience, and an incredible amount of hard work. Through the NCASS x .local series, we've had the privilege of meeting some of the people behind these businesses; the ones taking risks, showing up every day, and creating spaces, experiences, and opportunities for their communities.

As we look back on the series, we'd like to thank everyone who shared their stories and welcomed us behind the scenes. It's been a privilege to shine a light on the passion, creativity, and determination that make this industry so inspiring.

From a 3 AA Rosette kitchen in a luxury boutique hotel to running a thriving food truck business 🚚🔥

When the direction of the hotel changed, Chef Christian George made the decision to step away from fine dining and build something of his own. What followed was a street food brand centred around buttermilk fried chicken, simple menus, and a relentless focus on quality, consistency, and flavour.

In our latest Member Spotlight, Christian of Meat the chef shares how the discipline and standards of high-end kitchens translate to life on the road, the realities of running a food truck day-to-day, and the lessons he's learned about menu development, customer feedback, retail products, and long-term sustainability.

In the latest instalment of our NCASS x Indi Local series, we visit Clock + Dagger and sit down with owner Richard to hear the story behind his recently renovated pub.

At the heart of Clock + Dagger is a strong sense of community. Richard has created a welcoming space with something for everyone, from cask and keg beer to wines, spirits and low and no-alcohol options. It's the kind of local where regulars are known by name and everyone feels part of the pub's story.

Richard also shares his experience as an NCASS member, explaining how having expert support on hand helps take the pressure out of compliance and allows him to focus on running the business. As he puts it, there's always someone at the end of the phone when you need them – a service that feels driven by supporting operators, not profit.

If there’s one thing every hospitality business owner has in common, it’s that there are things you only learn by doing.

No business plan can prepare you for every challenge. No amount of research can fully explain what it’s like to run your own hospitality business day after day, season after season.

That’s exactly why we’ve taken the opportunity to look back through the NCASS Member Spotlight archive and asked a simple question: If our members could go back and speak to themselves on day one, what would they wish they’d known?

Their answers reveal some valuable lessons; not just for new businesses, but for anyone navigating the realities of hospitality.

It is a difficult time for all small businesses, but the catering and hospitality sector faces unprecedented cost increases and cost of living pressures. The sector continues to experience high levels of insolvency and without urgent and targeted support many viable businesses risk closure.

It is vital that support should be extended to the entire hospitality sector including mobile and event caterers, takeaways and food businesses that operate at the heart of their communities.

A Food Safety Management System (FSMS) is an essential toolkit for any food business. It helps ensure food is safe to eat, staff are working safely, and the business remains legally compliant. Whether you run a small street food stall or a growing catering operation, your FSMS is central to protecting customers, staff, and your reputation.

NCASS provides both paper-based and digital systems as part of membership, yet many businesses still stick with paper simply because it feels familiar or they’re unaware of the benefits digital systems can bring.

This article compares both approaches, including the pros and cons of each.
