NCASS (Nationwide Caterers Association)

NCASS (Nationwide Caterers Association) The UK's Trade Association for Caterers. Advice, law, & ways to trade safely, legally & profitably. We ask that everyone who uses this page respects that.
(1)

NCASS started out as MOCA, the Mobile & Outside Caterers Association in 1987 when a group of mobile caterers banded together to get a better deal for mobile catering businesses. Over time we developed tools and resources of value to all catering companies and to reflect that we became the Nationwide Caterers Association in 2005. We have been industry leaders in numerous fields, developing our own

Due Diligence systems to the principles HACCP long before Safer Food Better Business, the first online level 3 training course, the first online sustainability in catering course and much more, all delivered to members at the lowest possible cost. In October 2013 we entered into a government sanctioned Primary Authority Partnership with Cherwell District environmental health to develop 'assured advice and guidance' for our members and for use by environmental health & enforcement officers, covering all aspects of our business, but also to act as a conduit between industry and enforcement/government, developing best practice and industry knowledge. We were also asked to join the Business Expert Food Hygiene Group by the Better Regulatory Delivery Office (part of the Dept of Business Industry & Skills). The BEFHG meets with industry experts and government representatives to advise on the impact on business of food hygiene regulation and the practicalities of its implementation. We are able to raise issues for discussion as well as commenting on issues relating to our customers and industry. This forum is open for all to use, however, it's main focus is to enable easy access for our customers to raise issues with us and discuss the industry. For this reason we ask that non-members do not post adverts or promotions on this page as we will remove them. Our members pay their hard earned money to be part of the association and their needs are our priority. We couldn't do what we do without them, their feedback and support.

For many independent hospitality businesses and especially mobile ones, the off-season can be one of the toughest times of the year.

In our latest video with Indi Local, we talk about some of the ways independent businesses can keep trading, build connections and ride out the quieter months.
• Find partners who can take your product out of season.
• Keep the conversations going. Pick up the phone, make the call and start building relationships.
• Think beyond your usual customers and go directly to offices and corporates. Pop-ups, office visits, treat days and local trader collaborations can all open up new opportunities.
• Keep your brand visible. Stay active, keep your socials going and make sure people remember you when the next season arrives.
• Be nimble. Sometimes the best opportunities come from being willing to try something different.

In 2024, British farmers invested £20.9 billion to produce the food we eat – from the fields and farms that grow our crops to the livestock and produce that make their way onto our menus.

For independent hospitality businesses, there are lots of ways to show your support. 🍎🥔🥕

Buy British where you can, choose seasonal produce, get to know your local suppliers and most importantly, tell your customers about it.

Every time you put British produce on the menu, you’re helping support the farmers behind our food and the wider communities and businesses that depend on them.

This , let’s celebrate the people who work hard to keep Britain fed. 🇬🇧

What started with a single ice cream van has grown into 10 vans, an ice cream parlour and their very own ice cream factory.

In our latest video with Vanessa from Indi Local, we visit Gallone’s Ice Cream in Northampton, an Italian family business with roots stretching back 85 years.

Two years ago, the family made a huge decision: leave their previous jobs behind and build the business together. Today, they’re serving customers from their parlour and vans, while also supplying ice cream to farm shops, restaurants and businesses across the local area.

Of course, growth comes with its challenges. Managing staff, logistics, stock and rising costs means there’s plenty going on behind the scenes.

💡 And their advice to other local businesses?
Keep it simple. Pick up the phone. Talk to people. Share ideas.

In hospitality, saying yes can feel like the safest option. Another event means another customer, another menu item another sale. But when time, money, people and energy are limited, saying yes to everything can come at a cost.

Looking back at the past 12 months of NCASS Member Spotlights, some of the biggest lessons have come from what caterers have stopped doing, cut back, outsourced or walked away from.

It’s not about being less ambitious. It’s about being more selective and making space for the things that genuinely move the business forward.

We’ve pulled together some of the things our members have learned to say no to, and what those decisions have allowed them to say yes to instead.

Food truck or gazebo - which is really the better investment? 🚚

A food truck definitely turns heads, but is the investment worth it?

Vanessa from Indi Local spoke to Brooklyn Brownies about their experience moving from a gazebo to a food truck. While a gazebo or pop-up can be a simpler way to get started, it can be harder to stand out on a busy field. There’s also more to carry, more time spent setting up and packing down, and then there’s the weather to contend with!

Bad Boy Wings know all about the set-up and pack-down struggle too. They think food trucks are a great idea, but for them, there’s one big concern: what happens if you break down?

That’s why they’re looking at getting a trailer. If their vehicle ever breaks down, they can simply unhitch the trailer and still get themselves to an event.

So, if you run a food business, what have you gone for - gazebo, food truck or trailer? 👇
