MARCOSIE THE MAESTRO at CHESHIRE COUNTY
(Marcosie The Fourth Dimension / Marcosie Sweet Rose)

1st and Champion RP Youngstock, 1st and Reserve Champion Part Bred Welsh.

Time for a bit of a review.

Harold has now done 3 Shows in his life – Royal Bath & West, Derbyshire Festival and Cheshire County – and he has accumulated 2 Sectional Championships (PBA & BRP), 1 Youngstock Championship (BRP) and 3 Reserve Sectional Championships (PBW / PBA / BRP).

All as a 2-year-old gelding and all under different Judges.

It is why all our ponies are bred PBW / PBA / BRP, there versatility and all-round type shines through.

And on to the next show, having had a bit of a rest.

MARCOSIE THE MAESTRO at ROYAL BATH & WEST
(Marcosie The Fourth Dimension / Marcosie Sweet Rose)

First and Champion Riding Pony Breeding, massive thanks as always goes to Team Charlesworth. We do the breeding, you do the showing, and with US as a collective it all works.

Going back to my post of 20th October, I did however win the showing argument, and how this has paid off!

Harold is a 2 year old and this was his first show EVER! He is by our home bred Marcosie The Fourth Dimension out of our home bred Marcosie Sweet Rose who is out of our home bred Marcosie Tiger Lily.

To quote the other Greatest Showman (sorry Simon) – “THIS IS US!”

MARCOSIE TRIGGER POINT
(Smalland Tapdance / Marcosie Spirits Dre am)

The first foal of the year and it took me a month to take some photo's.

Tapdance is a stallion I have used before very successfully - Marcosie The Spirit of the Dance (2024 & 2025 Qualified in the HOYS Price Family In-Hand Final) - so I knew what I would get from him.

However it was Zena's first foal so you never really know how it is going to go. Well just like a "duck to water-ski'ing", and just like her mum (Crafton Blithe Spirit). Some mares are just born to be mums and Zena is one of those. A Champion in the Show Ring a Star in the Breeding Paddock.

Now I know everyone is proud of their foals, but this lad is SPECIAL!

HORSE & HOUND 30/04/2026

I have had so many messages and calls over the weekend about my contribution to the H & H feature on the change in Judging format of the HOYS In-Hand Supreme.

Well instead of bending my ear, I thought just open it up as another discussion post - so here it is.

If you haven't seen the feature, see below in full.

So come on don't be shy!

CRAFTON BLITHE SPIRIT
(11.05.2007 – 04.04.2026)

This is a post that I didn’t expect to make for years to come, but you never know what life is going to throw at you next, and I was not anticipating this.

In the early hours of Friday morning one of Spirits daughters gave birth to Spirits first Grand Child and life looked fantastic.

On Saturday morning the most severe colic I have ever experienced struck Sprit like an absolute truck. Vet called, all the usual jabs and examinations and one of those looks from the Vet that says you and her are out of time and you need to do the right thing. The pain killers that where due to “buy” us a couple of hours “wait and see” time lasted 30 minutes and that was it.

A short slow walk to the Paddock and it was over.

Those more philosophical people than me argue that horses do not have an expectation of the future, so their moment just ends, believe me I had an expectation of lots of future to come for her.

BROODMARE V STALLION

I spend lots and lots of time obsessing about the back-breeding in all my mares, and planning breeding cycles that I believe are complementary.

Yes they need to be correct and to the type I am looking for, BUT I need to see where this has come from.

Am I right or do I need to leave all the “heavy lifting” to the stallion? Some breeders seem to get away with it!

Come on, I raise the questions – THOUGHTS?

WHICH STALLIONS ACTUALLY “BREED ON”.

Looking back at the Sire Award winners going back over the past 20 years certain stallions stand out, Cusop Dimension – Strinesdale Matador - Kilvington Scoundrel to name just a few.

Now when I look at current stallions standing at Stud, then loads are by Cusop Dimension (he covered a lot of mares but even so!). Some are by Strinesdale Matador (he covered fewer mares but is well represented). But Kilvington Scoundrel doesn’t appear well represented, or is it me, have I missed some?

Is this the case for any other popular stallions?

Why is this?

Come on, I raise the questions – THOUGHTS?

HELP MY UNDERSTANDING, PLEASE!

WHEN TO GELD – PART II

As I said in Part I, and I got as many Private Messages as Comments, here is a summary of the feedback.

The lifetime of a pony / horse can be across Breeder / Judge / Producer / Rider so I have not tried to split the observations. Although to be honest they didn’t appear to differ much.

The consensus appears to be around day-to-day manageability, which is short-term hormonal temperament rather than long-term development. Again, the feeling is that physical development is not impeded unduly by gelding early.

Judges however appear to differ slightly with BRP and PBA Judges preferring geldings that do not have a pronounced crest and PBW Judges preferring a bigger neck and front.

It looks like, in practice, its all down to facilities and temperament!

A small sample and therefore far from definitive, but I found the discussion very interesting.

Thank you for all those that contributed, and on to the next!.

MARCOSIE THE SPIRIT OF THE DANCE
(Small Land Tapdance / Crafton Blithe Spirit)

Well, here we go again, another year another Broodmare conundrum!

We thought we would give Zara a couple of years off from the Show Ring and let her eat some grass, and roll in some mud and fox poo – how do they always find fox poo?

Anyway, to find a husband!

Let’s start of by saying I love Cusop Dimension and his stock; however, I have his lines interwoven through a lot of my lines therefore I need a total outcross.

Zara has NO Cusop Dimension at all, and I would like to find a Cusop Dimension free 148cm husband for her.

If you don’t know Zara, then where have you been for the last two years so I won’t go into all her winnings and appearances at the HOYS In-Hand final two years running. Lets just say this filly is a STAR and will return to HOYS at some stage with a foal at foot to have another swing at the Supreme just like her mum Crafton Blithe Spirit.

Here we go, I need a top-quality 14:2 stallion, but :
- No Cusop Dimension at all, I don’t care how many generations back – NONE.
- I need at least 15% Welsh Blood,
- I need at least 10% Arab Blood,
- the Stallion needs to be NPS registered,
- the Stallion needs to have had significant show success in his own right.
- the Stallion needs to have sired off-spring that has had significant show success.

So, have you any ideas on suitable stallions?
