We do use a smoker, but recently we’ve been holding back, only lighting if really needed (which isn’t that often).
But now the risk is too high
So let’s just hope the bees temperament stays the same for the next few weeks..
Otherwise it could get spicy

Today is being spent removing the last of the harvest, applying the varroa medications and giving back the wax cappings for the bees to clean any remaining honey off.

The propolis(bee glue) has started coming in by the load.
Some bees are given the job of collecting plant and tree sap which they mix with beeswax, pollen and saliva to produce this fantastic substance.
The bees use it to seal the hives shut for winter. And your tools, fingers and anything else the stuff gets on.
It contains over 300 active chemical compounds some of which have antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties (more research is needed here I feel).
They know winters coming, and now is time to prepare..
PS I’ve loads of honey for sale if anyone would like any 🤣

The bees have worked hard
I’ve worked hard,
There’s been sweat, a few stings (notably far less than previous years!), confusion and a lot of problem solving.
And it’s not over yet!
But now it’s your turn!
Because without you I cannot afford to keep my bees.
With that said I’m very proud to announce runny summer honey will be available from tomorrow!!!
Not only that, cut comb will also be available.
Cut comb is limited so if you want some I’d get in there before it goes!
Prices are the same as they’ve been all year.

It looks like this is our first supersedure of the year, and bang on time.
A supersedure queen cell (QC) is different to a swarm cell.
For a start there’s usually only one or 2 of them, and they’re usually centre frame, unlike a swarm cell which is normally on the periphery of a frame, and there’s usually lots.
It indicates an aging, failing or injured queen. In this instance it’s aging, she’s 3.
And she’s done well.
I’ll keep you posted on this hive as it’ll be interesting to see if we go into winter with 2 queens, or will she take herself off the meet her end..
Sad times, but collectively the colonie has decided.
