Monday mornings are always a good reminder of why we grow food.

This morning the farm shop shelves are looking particularly colourful, freshly stocked with veggies picked straight from the market garden. The broccoli is looking stunning, the spring greens are at their best, the mange tout are sweet and crunchy, and the spring onions were cut just hours ago.

Alongside the vegetables, we've got beautiful Cornish strawberries, freshly delivered bread from Vicky, and plenty more seasonal produce to fill your basket.

If you haven't visited for a while, now is a lovely time to see what's growing and taste the difference that truly fresh, local food makes.

Open today until 8pm and ready for your weekly shop.

Our latest newsletter has just landed in inboxes.

This month we're sharing news from the farm, including the return of our veg boxes, the arrival of a new yurt in the garden, progress on our house build, and what our livestock have been up to across Cornwall's nature reserves.

You'll also find details of our next English Longhorn beef boxes, our upcoming Grow Your Own workshop, and where to find us at Bodmin Nursery Market.

As we celebrate our tenth season at Real Food Garden, we're grateful to everyone who continues to support local food, wildlife friendly farming and this little corner of Cornwall.

Why do some vegetable gardens keep producing all summer while others seem to run out of steam by July?

At this time of year, it can feel as though the hard work of sowing and planting is done. In reality, what happens next often makes the difference between a garden that keeps producing right through the season and one that struggles.

Our next Grow Your Own course on Sunday 28th June focuses on keeping your vegetable garden healthy, productive and full of food for months to come.

We'll be sharing practical advice from our market garden on:

• W**d and pest control strategies
• Identifying and managing plant health issues
• Composting and compost teas
• Successional planting to keep harvests coming
• Planning now for winter crops

Whether you are growing a few raised beds, an allotment or a larger garden, the course is designed to help you understand what your plants need and how to respond to the challenges that every growing season brings.

There are a few spaces left.

To book, send us a message or email [email protected].

Our organic whole chickens are back in stock.

These birds come from Stephen Gelly Farm, where they spend their lives free ranging through an organic orchard, scratching, pecking and behaving exactly as chickens should. They are slaughtered and prepared on the farm, keeping food miles low and ensuring complete traceability from field to fork.

We know these chickens cost more than the supermarket alternative. That is because they are not produced in the same way. They have space to roam, a slower growing life, organic feed, and are raised by farmers who are paid fairly for their work. The result is exceptional flavour, high welfare standards and a food system that cares for animals, people and the land.

If you have never tried a properly reared organic chicken, this is a good place to start.

While you are here, the shop is filling up with the best of the season. We have the first mange tout, crunchy radishes, fresh salad onions, new potatoes and plenty more produce fresh from our market garden and our organic suppliers.

Pop in and see what is fresh.

Veg boxes are back.

The first vegetables of the season are finally making their way out of the market garden and into our boxes, with fresh radish, salad onions, chard, peas, salad leaves, new potatoes and more now being harvested.

This spring has not been an easy one for growers. A cold, dry start to the season has slowed crops down across the country, and here at Real Food Garden we are seeing the effects too. Rather than launching all our veg boxes at once, we are staggering our start and gradually increasing numbers as crops come into full production.

For those already signed up, we'll be in touch about your start date. This approach means we can fill every box with a good range of fresh, home grown produce rather than sending out boxes before the garden is ready.

The good news is that summer is on its way and the veg beds are looking greener every day. We can't wait to share the first flavours of the season with you.

This week is Nature Friendly Farming Week, and while much of the country is struggling through the heat, our English Longhorns are doing what they do best deep in the Cornwall Wildlife Trust reserve they help care for.

On hot days like these they disappear into the shade of the trees and scrub, slowly browsing their way through a huge variety of plants, with cool water always close by. Watching them move through the reserve you can see just how well suited they are to this landscape.

These cattle are not only producing food. They are shaping habitat, opening up areas for wildflowers, creating space for insects and birds, and helping maintain a rich and varied mosaic of vegetation across the reserve.

Farming alongside nature is not about forcing animals into a system. It is about creating landscapes where both wildlife and livestock can thrive together. In weather like this, the value of shelter, diversity and healthy pasture becomes impossible to ignore.

Our little farm shop is looking particularly good this Friday.

The first radishes from the garden have arrived with their peppery crunch, alongside bunches of fresh salad onions, kale, spinach, chard and salad picked from the market garden. Outside the growing season is gathering pace and inside the farm shop we are packed full of the sort of food that makes a Bank Holiday weekend feel like a proper treat.

We have Cornish new potatoes ready for the pan, spray free strawberries that taste of early summer, the first organic peaches of the season and beautiful organic asparagus.

There are plenty of easy Bank Holiday BBQ options too with our own sausages and chops, plus some brilliant new additions to the shelves including beetroot burgers, falafel, tortilla chips and dips.

If you are stocking up for gatherings, slow breakfasts, garden lunches or a last minute barbecue, we would love to see you this weekend.

This week the team planted more than 700 squash plants out in the field. It is one of those jobs that feels full of optimism. Small plants going into warm soil with months of growing ahead of them.

Squash can be slow to get going, so each plant has been tucked into mypex to help keep weeds down and hold warmth in the soil while they establish. We also place old tyres around each plant to give them a bit of shelter and create a warmer micro climate in those early weeks. It might not look glamorous right now, but in a few weeks you will not see the mypex at all beneath a sea of sprawling squash plants.

We have planted a brilliant mix of varieties this year, from reliable favourites to a few colourful newcomers, all destined for our autumn and winter veg boxes later in the season. Squash are one of the crops that carry us through the colder months. Soups, curries and roasted trays all start here, with a tiny plant, careful planning and a lot of teamwork.

Now we wait for sunshine, steady rain and plenty of growing.
