It’s at this time every year that I start to get questions from new willow growers keen to harvest their bounty.
And my answer is always the same - NOT YET!
After 20 years growing willow on a small scale in the U.K., I have learned a thing or two.

🍃At this time of year your willow is still in active growth. While it is still in leaf it is storing energy ready to provide you with a vigorous crop next year.

🍃Lignification is not complete. Cut it now and you will likely experience die back from the tips, reducing the usable length. It is also more likely to rot as the bark is softer and holding more water.

🍃Removing leaves by hand results in a rod that is not as smooth, and opens up points that may speed up rot.

🍃cutting now increases the risk of infection to the stool.

Wait until the leaves have dropped - usually late December / January for me in north west England, and you’ll have healthy, vigorous willow and beautiful hardy rods to weave with 😊

Salix triandra Black Maul is quite possibly the most common basketry willow grown commercially in the U.K.
It’s a good all rounder for basket making and willow crafts. It’s also commonly the variety used for white willow - willow that has had its bark removed.
Here it grows up to about 8ft tall.
Fresh growth is a dark glossy brown and it dries to a mid brown.
It would make an attractive hedge or windbreak and can be used for fedges or smaller living willow structures.
The downside for me is that deer find it irresistible. They will leave other varieties untouched and seek this one out. They ruin about half or more of my Black Maul each year 😩

Over the next few weeks I’m going to introduce you to some of the willows that I grow here.
First off is Salix gracilistyla Mt Aso - a great variety for floristry and general garden interest.

I grow this willow for its decorative pink catkins in early spring. The catkins appear on bare stems and are ideal for cutting to dry or for use in floral arrangements. Once cut the catkins will lose their pink colour over time but turn to a pretty silver grey.
My Aso makes a pretty shrub in the garden too with its broad glossy leaves in the summer. Willows are deciduous so the leaves drop in late autumn / early winter.
As an extra - the deer don’t seem to find this variety very tasty and have left it alone. 🦌

Is there any wiggle room on 10? No. The prices are on the website.
Can I mage 50? I usually have at least 100 in stock.

I’m on a little break at the moment before the madness of the pre season wholesale wreath making takes over! Im@still replying to messages and emails though maybe not as quickly.
If you look on my website everything is marked as out of stock. Products (both wholesale and retail) will be back online on the 25th of September.

Sept - Nov are super busy. Sore, tired hands and aching shoulders but with a sense of satisfaction of a job well done and an appreciation of those that support this small but sustainable business. 😊
