Sunday roast at The Coach & Horses in Bishop’s Stortford after a walk around Little Hadham👣🍽️

Went for the British pork belly roast (£18.50) — really tasty overall. The pork was soft, the gravy was good, and the roast potatoes had a nice crisp to them too. Yorkshire pudding was definitely on the larger side as well.

They also had sirloin beef (£21), lamb shoulder (£19.50), half-roasted chicken (£19) and a seeded sweet potato & chestnut loaf (£17) on the roast menu, so a good mix of options.

Only thing I’d say is I would’ve liked a bit more of a mix of veg on the plate, especially because what was there was really nice.

Staff were lovely and the whole place had that cosy pub feel where you end up staying longer than planned.

Finished with the Millionaire’s Chocolate Pot for dessert which was smooth chocolate ganache, dulce de leche toffee sauce, shortbread and mini toffee pieces with ice cream on top… rich in the best way and disappeared very quickly 😌

A really nice Sunday afternoon all round.

Sunday roast perfection 🍖 at The Ball House in historic Boston, Lincolnshire!

If you love a proper carvery, this one’s a must. The Ball House! It's tied to the local Batemans Brewery (family-run since 187) and serves up comfort food at its finest.

Freshly carved beef, turkey, gammon and pork piled high with giant Yorkshire puds, crispy roast potatoes, buttery veg, stuffing, mash and rich gravy.

You’re called up a table at a time, which keeps things flowing smoothly and adds to the relaxed, homely rhythm. The managers were hands-on and genuinely lovely. They were chatting with guests and keeping everything running seamlessly.

I went for the large plate at £14.50 and piled my plate up. It was good hearty food that sees you through a misty Lincolnshire Sunday, that's for sure.

After lunch, I took a drive just under an hour away to Castle Rising Castle 🏰, near Sandringham. It’s a 12th-century keep, surrounded by massive earthworks (huge man-made grassy banks built for defence centuries ago). Walking around in the fog was peaceful, atmospheric, and beautifully eerie! Just like stepping straight into history.

🍽️4.5/5 for the roast, 5/5 for the day.
Good food, good history, my kind of Sunday😊

🍂 Autumn Roast Return at The Chequers, Matching Green (Essex)

The August Bank Holiday felt like the perfect excuse to bring back Sunday roast reviews. Autumn’s here, and comfort food season has officially started😋.

I hadn’t been to The Chequers, Matching Green since Feb 2022, so there was an overdue visit to see if their roasts still delivered.

I went for the Roast Turkey Breast (£22.00), of thick, tender slices with sage & onion stuffing, chipolata & bacon, wagyu-dripping roasties, a Yorkshire pud the size of my fist, seasonal veg (carrots, broccoli, cavolo nero), plus a jug of gravy on the side.

We couldn’t resist adding a side of cauliflower cheese (paid extra), and it was bubbling, creamy, golden perfection.

And to finish? A cheeky shared chocolate slice, with berries and toasted almonds... because no roast review is complete without pudding.

🍽️5/5. Generous, hearty, and still one of Essex’s best spots for a proper Sunday roast.

Recently visited in Dunmow for the latest Sunday lunch review and it didn’t disappoint! Despite being super busy and short-staffed, the staff were absolutely lovely—attentive, informative, and made sure we felt looked after.

I went for the pork roast, which was fantastic. The apple sauce came without asking (a nice touch!), the meat was perfectly cooked, and the Yorkshire puddings were lovely. The veg served with it was delicious too, though different from the veggie roast, which included red cabbage. My group tried the chicken and vegetarian meatless roasts, and everyone left happy.

We also indulged in desserts as part of the £26 two-course menu—the triple chocolate brownie, deconstructed carrot cake, and sticky toffee pudding were all delicious! 🍮

If you’re in Dunmow, it’s worth a visit.

Would I go back? Absolutely! Big thumbs up.

4/5 🍽️👌

Aaaannnd.....another roast from last week. From the beautiful cathedral city of Ely, this delightful roast was served in a boat themed pub, on the waterfront surrounded by families of ducklings and boating odds and ends. The roast was perfectly proportioned with tasty parsnips, extra gravy and an excellent homemade veggie pie featuring sweet potato and maybeeeeee cumin?!?! The veggie seal of approval 🍽️4/5. Also the service was lovely.

Finished off with a lovely historic venture into the 17th century of Oliver Cromwells Ely home, where you can learn all about the civil war that led to the downfall of Charles I. Also how his son posthumously avenged his father.

If you ever find yourself on the way to Duxford for the Imperial War Museum, and have a hankering for history, potatoes, carrots and....caves. Then stop by the Fox and Duck in Therfield for a delightful roast dinner. Vegetarian/ vegan options available! There was plenty on the plate to enjoy as well as side veg and tasty/crispy/soft roast potatoes. Booking advised. Then when you are finished take a 5 minute drive to Royston and see a manmade cave built on lay lines, where the historical details are vague, but the tales are tantalising. Possibly used by the Knights Templar. Roast 🍽️ 3.75/5

A delicious roast awaits at The Hole in the Wall Little Wilbraham. Its a lovely spot that recently snagged the 2023/24 Good Food Award's Blue Ribbon! 🏆🍽. Nestled in the heart of Cambridgeshire, The Hole in the Wall has been serving the community from its charming 16th-century, Grade II-listed building for around 500 years, making deep roots in the village.

On the menu, this past Sunday was:
- Succulent slices of turkey, pork, and beef, each perfectly seasoned and cooked.
- Crispy, golden roast potatoes that are a crunchy delight on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
- Steamed broccoli, a hearty mix of carrot and swede and cauliflower cheese as standard.
- A homemade Yorkshire pudding, airy, crisp and thick in texture
- A savoury stuffing ball and a sausage wrapped in bacon, enhancing every forkful.
- Extra gravy in its own boat, perfect for drizzling.

At £23 for a selection of all meats, its cost was on par with prices around the area.

This was a fab Sunday Roast, the service matched the quality of the food, with attentive and warm staff. I fully recommend a visit, but do book! 4/5🍽️

Rating: 4/5 – Highly recommended for its superb roast and vibrant atmosphere, just a touch of decor refresh could elevate the experience even further.

Happy Mother's Day! Sundays are made for savouring, so make them deliciously unforgettable! Enjoy your roasts!☺️😋

The latest Sunday lunch review comes from Eastwell Manor Hotel and Spa , a historic Kent estate with a legacy that spans over 450 years.

Priced usually at £35 for a three-course affair, but I had a bought a deal with that cost only £25. Kentish roast beef was the choice and the meal included an array of sides including red cabbage, roast parsnips, cabbage, broccoli, roast potatoes, and a generous Yorkshire pudding that perfectly complemented the succulent beef.

Before diving into the main course, I kicked off with a creamy and delightful cauliflower starter and for dessert, I indulged in a chocolate and Grand Marnier marquis that was a favourite for my sweet tooth.

While the meal was certainly tasty and filling, there was nothing out of the ordinary to report upon. However, sometimes all you need is a hearty and satisfying meal, and this Sunday lunch delivered just that. The dining experience was elevated by the lovely ambiance of the room with its rustic charm and beautiful ornate fireplace that paid homage to its rich history. The attentive staff added to the overall pleasant experience, and they even fulfilled my request for apple and mint sauce on the side.

In summary, Eastwell Manor offered a lovely Sunday roast dinner, earning a solid 4/5 rating. While it may not have been the most adventurous it delivered a satisfying and well-rounded meal that perfectly suited the traditional setting and ambiance of this historic establishment.

Eastwell Manor is a captivating Kent estate now acquired by Champneys Health Spa. It boasts a history that spans over 450 years. Originally named for a nearby spring frequented by Saxon shepherds, this storied estate's tale began in the time of King Edward the Confessor. Its most distinguished guest was Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, a son of Queen Victoria, who resided here from 1874 to 1893. This era witnessed visits from Queen Victoria herself, along with the future Edward VII. Today, Eastwell Manor offers an enchanting fusion of rich history and contemporary comfort for those seeking a tranquil escape.
