Here we have the mud, sweat and tears that goes into making new beds. We are on such heavy clay that drainage channels are a must. We’ve also used the topsoil we dug out from the drainage channels to raise the levels of the beds, as we are so close to the water table. We’ve had a lot of standing water on the field over the last few months so this will give our flowers the best possible chance 🤞☔️

All we need now is 10 tonnes of well rotted manure and we will have lots more space for planting out in the weeks to come!

Digging complete ⛏️👏
We’ve been creating this ditch and mound for two reasons (or 3 if you count the fun factor 🤪). The first is to raise the level of the ground so we can plant our new shrubs without downing them. The second, and rather serendipitously, we get more drainage as a result. Unfortunately there were no archeological treasures found, but it was a job well done!

Finally, we did some planting out this weekend. We’ve had a couple of (mostly) dry days after several weeks and months of completely unworkable soggy ground. We’ve only planted out the beds on slightly higher ground, as the others are still too wet. But we will get there 🤞

A lovely bunch from last year. We’re just a few weeks away from rolling out our seasonal flower deliveries and subscriptions. Just a bit more sunshine should do the trick ☀️🙏

Update on the plot. Everything is beginning to look nice and green 🌿 Sweet Williams have really started to bulk up, the ranunculus and anemones are on their way too. We have buds on the roses! 🌹 …And hundreds of hardy annuals and perennials to plant out. It’s going to be a busy few weeks!

How many shrubs can you fit in a Volvo XC60?!

This weekend has been very exciting indeed. In a bid to boost our variety of flowers and foliage, we have splashed out on an array of different shrubs. The next job is to get the JCB out to dig up a mound of soil to plant them in, so they aren’t trying to get established with their feet in water. The constant wet weather has been very challenging on our heavy clay soil but, with a bit of luck and a few dry days, we will have these planted in the next couple of weeks.

(And for those wondering, you can fit 79 shrubs in a Volvo XC60) 😆

Happy Valentines/Palentiles/Galentines Day friends 🌹

Since we work with the seasons and therefore don’t have any roses yet - here is a photo of our Roo as a pup “helping” deadhead the garden roses last year.

(Don’t worry the stem had been dethorned!)
