Why is the gut microbiome so important for children?

A healthy gut microbiome does so much more than support digestion. It plays an important role in immune development and may also influence mood and emotional wellbeing. The balance of bacteria in your child’s gut can however be disrupted by illness, antibiotics and a diet lacking in a variety of plant foods and fibre.

Gemma is available here at Amaranth to answer any questions you may have and can offer specific suggestions on foods or microbiome supplements for your children.

Getting a good balance of nutrients into children isn’t always easy!

We’d love to say that all the nutrients children need can come from food, but tastes, preferences, busy schedules and budgets can all affect what ends up on their plates and in their mouths.

This is where carefully selected supplements can help.

They can fill nutritional gaps in the diet or provide additional support when specific needs arise, such as during periods of growth, increased activity or recovery from illness.

But not all children’s supplements are created equal

Some contain very low levels of nutrients, alongside added sugars or sweeteners. We’ve assessed lots of brands over the years and always come back to Nature’s Plus.

Their Animal Parade range combines fun animal shapes and fruity flavours with a comprehensive range of vitamins and minerals.

The important thing is to be selective and give your child only the supplements they actually need.

Our nutritionists can help you work out what those might be. We’ll talk to you about what your child eats, how they sleep and their lifestyle before making personalised recommendations.

Not sure where to start? Drop us a DM and we can book you in for a chat.

Magnesium : The calming one 💚

Magnesium plays an important role in nervous system function, muscle health and energy production. It’s often considered when looking at sleep, stress and muscle recovery.

We get magnesium from foods such as green vegetables, beans, pulses, nuts and wholegrains, but children with limited food choices may not always get enough.

It can be difficult to fit a meaningful amount of magnesium into a small tablet or capsule, so a powder can be a useful option.

This one contains magnesium citrate, which can also help support bowel regularity.

Vitamin D : The sunshine vitamin ☀️

Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, teeth, muscles and immune function.

Our bodies make vitamin D when sunlight reaches the skin, but in the UK, the sun isn’t strong enough for us to make sufficient vitamin D between October and early March.

And, of course, we also need to protect children’s skin from excess

A healthy diet should provide your teenager with all of the nutrients they need. But is it? Here are some signs that suggest you might want to think about extra nutritional support.

Not sure what your teen needs? Every teenager is different and so their nutrient requirements are different. DM or message for a FREE review and personalised recommendations from one of our registered nutritionists🤍

Skin problems can be linked with nutrient status, gut health and diet, not just hormones!

If they seem to catch something as soon as term starts, it may be worth looking at key nutrients for immune and the gut microbiome health.

Teenagers have high nutritional demands, and low iron, vitamin D, B vitamins and other nutrients can contribute to tiredness or poor concentration. A blood test and a dietary assessment can help to identify gaps or deficiencies!😴

Fussy eating, vegetarian or vegan diets, skipping breakfast, avoiding dairy or simply eating on the go can make nutritional gaps more likely🥒

This can bring extra demands, a need for adequate energy from food and potentially additional nutrients to sustain energy and support recovery!🏃

What is in your skin supplement, and what should be in there?✨

There are now hundreds of supplements promising better hydration, fewer wrinkles and healthier, glowing skin, but product quality can vary enormously. Do you really know what is in your skin supplement and is there evidence for the form and dosage used?

In our latest Skin Supplement Buying Guide, we’ve looked at the research behind some of the most popular ingredients and, in this video, I’m focusing on three of my favourites:

🐟 Omega-3 – EPA and DHA are incorporated into our cell membranes and influence inflammatory signalling, making omega-3 particularly interesting for dry or inflammation-prone skin. Look for at least 300mg of EPA per capsule, purity and certification matter here too.

✨ Astaxanthin – a powerful carotenoid antioxidant. Small clinical trials suggest it may help support skin moisture and elasticity and reduce signs of premature skin ageing. Look for 3mg to 6mg.

🤍 Collagen peptides. One of the most researched skin supplements, with studies suggesting benefits for skin hydration and elasticity. But dose and quality matter. simply having “collagen” on the label doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting an effective amount. A 10g dosage is most cited in research and grass fed, sustainable marine matter here.

The same applies to all skin supplements: look beyond the marketing and check the form, dose and quality of the ingredients.

Our new Skin Supplement Buying Guide looks at 7 popular ingredients — including collagen, omega-3, astaxanthin, hyaluronic acid, zinc, vitamin C and beta-carotene, and explains what the research says and what to look for when choosing a product.
