It's happening...!!!

Been a slower start to the harvest this year (to be honest, there are some seeds that aren't even in yet). But what a joy to start getting the summer flowers and vegetables in!

Today I made the first of hopefully many ridiculously over the top bouquets and decorated the dinner table to eat a mixed leaf salad with seared pork chop, quick pickled radishes, and infused cider vinegar all from the farm.

I put tater tots on top after the photo 😂 but with the late potatoes now in the ground, maybe I'll have a go at making some of them too one day!

A spring of glorious diversity! And not so glorious photos... So far I have gently relocated two toads and two hedgehogs to make their homes closer to the wild edges of our fields, rather than mid pasture or in the hay barn that our sheep will soon be using! The partridge and pheasants are simply content to share the space.

We are so grateful to be able to see these creatures, who have been coming back slowly year after year as we and surrounding farmers recognise the importance of allowing wildlife to coexist.

Whew! First lambs along a week early which must have been a relief for poor mama - she had triplets in there! Now for a tiring few days for both of us as we try to make sure they get enough milk and sunshine to stay healthy and strong.

What a great way to kick off 2026 at the land skills hub at Fivepenny! Thanks to the amazing efforts of local craftspeople, we managed to get the new bunkhouse ready for participants at least half an hour before it was needed 😬 and the sun came out to give a glorious first impression of the farm! ☀️

This course was organised by our steering group member Oluwa and funded through Farming in Protected Landscapes to give young people a taster of the range of careers available in sustainable land skills, from livestock and horticulture to green building and seasonal cookery, and introducing the political work that underpins much of land work.

Want to hold events like this in a beautiful, alive, and only slightly chaotic location? The facilities at the Land Skills Hub are intended to support intergenerational and intersectional sharing of practical and political skills for land justice and restoration. Read more on the website in our bio and get in touch with any ideas!

Our response to the new SFI26 Offer

We are immensely disappointment at the Government’s recent announcement that the 2026 Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) in England will exclude farmers and growers operating on fewer than 3 hectares of land.

Despite changes which will help smaller farms to have a fairer share of the payments - including an early application window and a £100,000 cap on payment sizes - we are seriously disheartened that an area-based eligibility threshold has been reintroduced.

Many of our smallest farms were preparing to join the scheme this year, and for them this news will come as a huge blow.

We will be working hard in the coming days, weeks and months to do all that we can to make the case for removing the are-based threshold once again and to make the SFI truly work for small farms.

Call to action:
📩 In order for us to proceed with a strong case, we need to compile information about farm businesses which will be impacted. If you are a farm in England operating on under 3ha of land, please send us your details. If you would be willing to come to a meeting with DEFRA or open up your farm for a visit we would love to hear from you. Please email: [email protected]

It's been a busy year and a long wet winter. I'm glad to have celebrated the cold, the dark, and the return of the light with all the amazing Fivepenny folk.
