Organic September is a good time to talk about why organic matters to us.

We’ve been choosing organic for over 55 years. Not because it’s fashionable. Because we believe good food starts with good farming.

Healthy soil. More biodiversity. Farming that works with nature.

That’s also why we’re paying attention to the changes to genetic technology rules in England.

Some gene-edited crops can now be brought to market under a new regulatory system. But organic standards haven’t changed. Genetic engineering, including gene editing, is still excluded from organic production.

The Soil Association has raised concerns about what the new rules could mean for organic farmers and food businesses, particularly when it comes to labelling and traceability.

And that matters.

If you choose organic, you should be able to trust what that means.

What's in Season This August

August is one of the most abundant months of the year, with fields, gardens and hedgerows bursting with fresh produce. Eating seasonally means enjoying fruit and veg at their very best while supporting local growers and reducing food miles.

In season this month:

🥕 Vegetables: Artichokes, aubergines, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, carrots, chard, courgettes, cucumbers, fennel, French beans, garlic, kohlrabi, lettuce, mangetout, marrow, onions, pak choi, peas, peppers, maincrop potatoes, radishes, rocket, runner beans, shallots, spring onions, sweetcorn, tomatoes, turnips and watercress.

🍓 Fruit: Bilberries, blueberries, cherries, damsons, greengages, loganberries, plums, raspberries, redcurrants and strawberries.

🌿 Herbs: Basil, chives, coriander, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, sorrel, tarragon and thyme.

🍄 Plus: Wild mushrooms are beginning to make an appearance too.

However you enjoy your summer cooking, seasonal produce is a simple way to bring more flavour to your plate while doing a little good for the planet.

What we grow, eat, & share should nourish more than just us.

It should care for the land, the rivers, and the wildlife we live alongside.

Pesticides are finding their way into our food and into the wild places we depend on - Take glyphosate — a chemical used in common w**d killers. It’s now widely detected in soil and water, and traces can end up in everyday foods. There’s growing concern about what this means for long-term health, and for the ecosystems that keep our food system alive.

One use in particular stands out: spraying crops just before harvest to dry them more quickly and evenly. It’s efficient, but it also means residues can remain on the food we eat, from bread to beer to breakfast cereals.

There's a better way

We are certified organic by The Soil Association.
Like us they have been chipping away at change.

The Soil Association is calling for
🍅 An end to the use of glyphosate as a pre-harvest drying agent.
🥦 Stronger safeguards on pesticide residues in food
🐝 Better support for farmers moving towards nature-friendly farming

We think they still get it right - everything from Kombucha to Kale should pass through caring hands.
