With only two days until it's release, we thought we'd share the story behind how The Devil's Casks got its wicked name

A pioneering new release from County Cork’s iconic Midleton Distillery

Finished in hogshead casks crafted from Irish sweet chestnut, this is the result of an eight-year exploration, led by Midleton’s Master Distiller Kevin O’Gorman. Six Irish sweet chestnut trees were hand-picked by the distillery’s specialist forestry team, with their timber left to air dry for two years before being coopered into 250-litre hogshead casks. The result is an exceptionally rare and characterful expression, defined by a rich, sweet character, with layers of indulgent caramel complemented by distinctive earthy wood notes.

A small batch release, the Devil’s Casks 10 Year Old is matured in first-fill oloroso sherry casks with a Pedro Ximénez cask finish and presented at cask strength, 56.6% abv, without artificial colour or chill filtration.

Bowmore’s soft smoke is very much on the back foot here, partially obscured by the rich influence of the sherry casks, and the wh**ky is deceptively soft despite its high abv; a few drops of water turn down the heat without breaking its devilish spell.
