After researching the history and origins of liquors from all over the world we stumbled across the mint julep

. Originating from the southern states of America in the 18th century. The mint julep is most famous for being the official drink of the annual Kentucky derby. Churchill downs, the Louisville racetrack has been the home of the derby since 1875 and began promoting the mint julep in association with the race from 1938. Each year over the two-day period 120,000 juleps are sold in gold or silver highball glasses, definitely our kind of party. Intrigued by what we had read we decided to make some for ourselves. In a small Welsh kitchen we concocted our first bottle. We weren’t disappointed. The whiskey still shone through and the added sugar with the mint made it all the more enjoyable and easier to drink. Needless to say the bottle didn’t last long and we started making more for our own enjoyment. In the months and years that followed we took our julep to parties, to music shows, to festivals and general get-togethers. The reaction from the friends and musicians that we shared it with was always incredibly positive and often followed with requests to purchase, even from the ones that claimed to dislike whiskey. This continued for over a decade until eventually we decided that we were being incredibly selfish by not sharing this wonderful drink with as many people as possible. Although we loved and still do love the traditional julep. In creating Idle Saint we wanted to do something that was our own, something different and interesting, yet still giving a knowing and deserved nod to the drink we had become obsessed with over the last ten years. We realised that despite the Mint julep being synonymous with the glitz and glamour of the Kentucky derby. We as individuals were in fact not remotely glitzy or glamorous. With this in mind we decided that we would draw influence from the old prohibition moonshine outfits of the deep southern American states. We wanted to make a drink that didn’t just appeal to the top hats and tails of the Louisville racetrack. We wanted to capture the sophistication and charm of the derby in a drink which could be enjoyed by everyday people like ourselves.
