It's been a very busy summer, but all the dairy calves are weaned and are enjoying the freedom of a big pen!

A question we often get asked is, what do you do with the boys calves.
The answer is, we use Artificial insemination with our cows. This is helpful in a number of ways
1) it's gentler for our heifers who are first time Mums, no 1,000kg bull to contend with.
2) we have a wider selection and control over genetics *no inbreeding! Which leads to
3) we can s*x the semen so that we end up 90-100% female dairy calves which means if we do get bulls there is space for the few we do get. This year has been 100% ♀️
This means we can work with nature and follow the cows cycle but also combine that with science to help manage how we farm.
