Grading Dover Sole ⚙️🐟

While most of Brixham sleeps 🌌 our night shift team are hard at work, using our Marel Fish Grading System to grade an incredible amount of fish every night into different sizes.

In fact, this machine is capable of grading up to 1 tonne of Dover Sole every hour 🤯

That’s around 200 fish every minute! 🐟🐟🐟

And Dover Sole isn’t the only species it handles.

The system can also grade Lemon Sole, Megrim Sole, Plaice and Monkfish, helping us have all the fish sorted, graded and quality checked by 6am for our online auction ⏰🛎️

Mitch - Night Shift Supervisor

Since joining BTA in 2018 as a fish market operative working nights, Mitch stepped into a supervisor role in 2024.

Now, Mitch helps keep the night shift running smoothly - from carrying out quality checks and working with the team to make sure everything is sorted and graded for the 6am auction. He also works alongside our other supervisors and managers to complete transport and landing document checks.

With nearly half of BTA’s workforce working through the night, this team plays a vital role behind the scenes ⚙️🐟

Good work Mitch 👏 We look forward to seeing your golf skills as you represent BTA at an upcoming golf event ⛳️

The Mercurius M277 bringing in the 🦑 this morning 📸

Cuttlefish is becoming a familiar sight around the fish quay at the moment, as the season gets underway and boxes of it begin making their way onto the market.

It’s the highest-volume species landed in Brixham, making it a very important catch here and one that we should be seeing more of in the months ahead.
