Morning all! Our fence is now up in Chalk and I just wanted to remind people why we have done this:
To protect an area of outstanding natural beauty with many many species of plants.
We need to ensure that we can close this area off so that our cattle do not access it for a period of time but they can still graze the other side in accordance with our SFI. It is their favourite part to sit and graze and they then ignore the other parts of the hill that need grazing!
There is no right of way across this land yet people consistently let their dogs off the lead and walk around the field as well. We have left a nice area of land (which also has no right of way) the other side of the actual path too. They cut fences and posts so that they don't have to walk a few metres to the actual fence and right of way.
We are not intending to plough this land up (quite a ridiculous accusation!), we are protecting it instead. The seeds from these plants get harvested and then sown in other areas of the country which is really important.
My 17 year old farm apprentice was subjected to abuse from a member of the public yesterday and asked 'do you know how muddy that track gets in the winter' to justify her anger at being told she was trespassing and had damaged the brand new fence that has just been put in at great cost.
The fact is there is no right of way, whatever reason you have for wanting to cross this field and the argument of 'well I have been doing in for years' doesn't make any difference. We just haven't see you to ask you not to do it!
I am not trying to be a dictator (an actual accusation) or 'difficult', I am just trying to do my job and do something good for the environment. Trust me it would be so so much easier not to do it!
Please do not abuse farm staff that are completing a job that they have been told to do. Send me an email or call me, it's not like I am difficult to find! Or better still if you are irate, then maybe contact our landlords to put in a complaint rather than having a go at me or my staff.
