NO MACKEREL ON PESKY! Sounds alarmist, but that’s because it is. We heard one of the best fish merchants in Britain tell his buyers that they were going to have to pay £16/kg for Mackerel - simply because the fish aren’t there.
Again, you cannot point the finger at the fishermen when it is the regulators who set quota. If you cannot trust those who are accountable for the ecological and economic health of the industry, what hope is there?
However, there is always enormous cause for hope. Fish stocks are both resilient AND reproductive when given the space to do so. What’s needed is a breakthrough in the cross territorial negotiations that account for impact more than 5 minutes into the future. Nothing is impossible. An enormous catalyst to this goal are the supermarkets such as who have taken mackerel off their shelves. Hopefully others will follow suit.
In the meantime, Pesky will steer as much demand to species with better stock health and management structures. Sardines are about to come into season and Herring is one of our most undervalued yet healthiest catches.
Never underestimate your power to enact change. On your own, you can lead those around you. As a collective, you can change an industry.
