Realm.
Where do we begin something that isnât often spoken about in farming. A loss of a cow.
It wonât seem much to some but for someone like my husband who put a lot of time and effort in rearing such a fine bull, it hit us all hard.
On Christmas Eve (on all the days of the year, âhappy Christmasâ) Realm broke his leg. An injury so bad that the vet said he had to be shot as soon as possible. What a kick in the teeth! All the hard work over the last 18 months⊠gone in minutes.
A bull that had been sold to a new home, to make a new bloodline, to do the job heâd been bred for, gone just like that.
Fortunately we have never been in this situation before, however we werenât sure what to do next as most places were shut until after Christmas.
What would have been a massive waste of a great animal, we were able to salvage something out of a terrible situation thanks to a few friends helping us out of the s**t.
Later on I was looking at Realmsâ Hide and I asked if I could keep it thinking of the great markings he had and what a great memory it would be of the first pedigree bull weâd raised.
We rang round so many different businesses trying to see if anyone would take on such a big project but unfortunately nowhere seems to cure cow hides anymore.
So I decided to take on the project myselfâŠ
And what project that was.
The hours spent scraping flesh was something Iâd never considered, they make it look so easy on all the videos.
But fast forward to now, out of one of the worst situations weâve faced, we have the most amazing Cow Hide.
As a family, weâve all learnt a valuable lesson -
Sometimes s**t happens in your life but itâs the best fertiliser to make you grow đ±
