The bumblebees are loving the wildflower courtyard this year - many different types of bee but one thing in common - they love teasels!!

The final selection for 2026. The food deliveries continue, although you have to be quick or one of your siblings will nick your mouse!! The youngsters are now frequently exploring inside the barn - if we go in there during the day, there is often one of them perched on some random item - beams, feed troughs..... The youngest is still very visibly fluffy but most of them are now fully fledged. Our hay fields were cut last week so hopefully, it will be a little easier than long grass as they learn their hunting skills. Very soon, the parents will cease the food deliveries - I think they have earned a rest!

Two weeks on from the last video clips and the youngsters are almost fully fledged. Lots of wing-flapping and stretching going on, and some of the older owlets are now venturing out from the box onto beams in the barn - practising their take-offs and landings. You can still see the 'fluff' on the youngest but they're almost there. However, you have to feel for the parents - 6 owlets, probably eating 4-6 'snacks' a night each - that's a lot of work. Pretty soon, the youngsters will be out fending for themselves.

The first appearance of the Buttle Farm owls of 2026. We have at least five owlets, and possibly six, with the parents working tirelessly to keep their growing family fed. Last night, the camera was triggered nearly 400 times, and this compilation captures some of the best moments. As owls begin incubating from the first egg, the chicks hatch over a period of time, which is why the owlets can be seen at different stages of development — from tiny fluffballs to much more fully feathered youngsters.

A final selection of clips from the Owlets of 2025. They are now moving around the barn and the parents are working hard to keep up the food delivery rate! They will be glad when the youngsters start hunting for themselves.

Owlet update - a collection of video snips from last night - there were a LOT of feeding runs by the adults through the early hours. Have the sound on when you listen - it's not a pretty noise, but a very distinctive one! In the last clip, the youngster who didn't get the feed seems very unhappy!!
Most of their fluff feathers have now gone so won't be long before we start finding them moving around the barn to test those wings.

Two owlets showed themselves overnight - stretching and flapping wings to build up those muscles. You can still see the 'fluffy down' on the chest of the flapper - they've got a bit of growing and feathering-up to do before they are ready to venture out. It is possible that another may emerge but it is good to see these two looking so well in what has apparently been a tough year for owls.

There have been some scuffling noises from the owl box in the last week, so the camera is in place and we tracked a number of visits to the box during the night. This is later in the year than we would perhaps normally see, but it seems that we are not unusual in that with others reporting similar stories online. Hopefully our pair are feeding some youngsters.
They may be behind schedule but hoping that they are successful in raising a brood again this summer.

We've spotted the barn owl out hunting several times recently unusually late - normally we don't see them much after dawn. Hopefully he is busy feeding Mrs Owl who is sitting on some eggs 🤞🤞
