Another fun social at the The Cambridge Blue. As well as the company, I enjoyed 3 whiskies:
1) Tomatin Whisky 2006 Port Cask - cocoa, coffee, jammy, red grapes, praline wafers
2) Arran Whisky Amarone Finish - cherry bakewell, melty milk chocolate
3) Torabhaig Distillery Allt Glenn - cheesy, smokey, meaty. Salty, bitter, hints of floral honey, vanilla mousse and a little soapy.

A happy from me. One nearly and one . Both delicious. Both featured by me fairly recently already.

Tullibardine Whisky 225 Sauternes - always enjoy drinking this. Today: peppery, buttery pastry. Like a puff pastrty cinnamon swirl, but with pepper and vanilla rather than cinnamon. Cask and char. Dry white wine.

The Whisky Barrel Voyager 1 Dalmunach - the bottle will be missed ⚰️. Today: musty, damp, dark chocolate, pineapple, tea, and bitter toffee.

I've got myself quite a backlog of lovely bottles and samples I want to do reviews for. With a free bit of time tonight I sat down with this Romanian Carpathian Single Malt I was very kindly sent, for a tasting: initially aged in bourbon barrels it was finished in Rhum barrels (note the 'h').

As I poured it there was a real rum sweetness explosion - like you get the smoke in the air pouring a heavy Islay, but with light brown sweetness instead.
Nosing is far less 'bottom shelf' though. Candied sweetness with hints of citrus, but floral a little bit like a gin. Very definite chunky pineapple, maybe a pineapple cake/bread, the fruit mixed with a ye**ty funk.
First mouthful, wonderfully clean, minimal burn, then nice prickling, warming. Slightly bitter finish, but with that tropical tone rather than oak.
Second taste there's some vegetal funk, the youth of rum.
There's vanilla sponge, but it's malty, and soaked in an earthy sugar syrup.
As it, and I, sit there's oak, and cask char. A touch of chilli, hint of meaty depth. The end of the glass was even a little metallic and fizzy. The empty glass is malty and tropical.

I'm a fan of Carpathian, this being the second expression I've tried. Both had a light enjoyable character with nice additions from the casks. And from my research and conversations it seems clear there's a drive to make something, and be, authentic.

Last night I hosted my second tasting of the week for Burns Night. New venue, new audience, new whiskies - everyone at Northstowe Tap & Social was super welcoming, and I think enjoyed what I had to offer.

Master of Malt Secret Speyside 10,
The Glenturret Distillery Triple Wood 2024,
Douglas Laing & Co. Timorous Beastie Port Finish,
Smokehead Twisted Stout,
The Glasgow Distillery Co. 1770 Peated,
Atom Brands Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire & Sauternes finish 12.

There was a very clear winner from the vote at the end of the evening, and it was my favourite too: the Glasgow Distillery core bottling of 1770 Peated - despite us questioning whether I'd placed it optimally after the Smokehead. A lovely honey smoke with parsnips and roast pork chop alongside dark brown sugar and pastry. A nice thick sherried finish with hints of spicy paprika/turmeric/chilli powder.

In terms of value for money, the single cask, secret 10 year old Speyside is a pretty great deal. A wonderful first whisky and a relaxed sipper. Ye**ty white grapes and floral honey. Coming back after a few others I found it grassy with milk bottle sweets.

Last night was heaps of fun at Thirsty Cambridge for our (early) Burns Night tasting. A packed out room of people, some who were there at the beginning of their whisky journey, and some who were excited to delve into the new line up.

Master of Malt Secret Highland 8yo,
Whisky Souls Living Souls 15yo Solera #1,
Lochlea Distillery x Stout finish,
The Glenturret Distillery 10yo Peat 2024,
Douglas Laing & Co. Rock Island Tequila finish,
Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire & Port cask 12yo,

The vote gave a clear win to the bottle from The Glenturret - with its bbq smoke and bacon, vegetal beef gravy, and a hint of foam banana. One more core release of peated bottles from them to go!

My favourite was the Lochlea x Overtone collab - the nose immediately creamy, with a taste of dark chocolate and some grapes hiding in there, but the finish of chilli is really what got me.

Special mention for the Seaweed... & Port cask 12yo for getting me to scrawl down 'charred jam' at the end of the night. A lovely note to find - now to experiment in the kitchen. Anyone got a blow torch?

It was a fun social last night at The Geldart. I'm still recovering from my Christmas cold, so I didn't go crazy and who knows how reliable my notes are, but I was very happy with this Kilkerran Single Malt. I don't think I've tried the core 12 Year old before!

I initially got Agave on the nose, along with tamarind, candyfloss and rusk biscuits, some medicinal herb (not that one). In the mouth it's dry, smokey oats or smoked fish terrine. Honey glazed ham, a different medicinal herb (still not that one 😂)

Christmas has felt like a wonderful break, although not so much a wonderful rest yet. But I've still got another week of freedom left. Here's a bottle kill from today. A wonderful Rock Island from Douglas Laing & Co. Remarkable Regional Malts. A really marvelous balance between a sweet richness and a pervasive soft peat.

Rummy brown sugar. Earthy jacket or roast potato. Jam roly poly. Floral smoke, salty rocks.

Christmas Eve whiskies, including a bottle kill. That was one of the first special bottles I bought, back at my first whisky festival, in Edinburgh, but only opened last year to celebrate moving into my flat. Both were nice evening-enders today after an early Christmas dinner (with red wine and brandy)

Eden Mill Hip Flask #8
Red jammy oaty breakfast cereal bar
Golden syrup
Cardamom, cloves brown sugar, pecan pie

North Star Spirits Loch Lomond Whiskies Inchfad 15
Funky and smokey like an ex-peated rum.
Touch of menthol and petrol fumes
Struck Match
Dense red jelly on a lamb or pork chop
Allotment fire

Two nice drams enjoyed playing games with family after a day with even more family. Nice uncomplicated whiskies with lots going for them.

Lindores Abbey Distillery MCDXCIV: dark chocolate flapjack, ginger, peach or nectarine
The GlenAllachie 15: Marmelade on toast, oak spice

This 8 yo Islay from That Boutique-y Whisky Company rounds out a busy day and weekend. Christmas week begins, my parents have arrived, turkey is in the fridge, the glaze on the lebkuchen is setting.

Ashy bbq'd sausage, lime, rich red berry compote. It's a soft peat, but persistent.
