Took the blackface with mule twin lambs back from the other farm yesterday. Hoping for a early start to marking to beat the heat tomorrow!

🐑 Lambing 2026 over and out!🐑

Recap: All in all not a bad year. It started very slow with only 15% lambed by day 10. Not that annoyed at that as the first two weeks were atrocious with cold and rain. Losses were low following those two bad weeks mainly only coming in the form of massive lambs getting stuck. Predators took a fifth of what they normally would. Mastitis was higher than normal out in the field, need to have a think about that one. Infections arising from any sheep and lambs brought is was drastically cut with better pen hygiene. Had to pull A LOT of lambs.

Round up: Average to good year, need to keep moving towards mules and first crosses of mules to give an easier lambing for our cross flock. We need to buy another 200 blackies as they were no work at all. Also we need more mules to steer away from the heavily texelled crosses we currently have. One negative with the mule lambs this year, bit too much colour on them, change my tup choice. Blue texel over the gimmers was good idea, a lot less issues with a slightly smaller lamb.

Toughest thing this year was Lochlan taking it so hard we never got to see each other. Leave at 5.30am to him balling his eyes out about me leaving. Get back in at 9pm after hes asleep. Farming can be hard on the family too.

And they say farming is bad for wildlife and ecosystems...

Before we bought over our second farm Whitestone it hadn't had much livestock on it for a handful of years and little bird life about.

The only thing we reintroduced was our own livestock. They helped to improve soil health with there dung, reduced grass pressure and created bare areas of soil with trampling leading to increased wildflowers. Grazed larger areas leading to mixed grazing heights perfect for ground nesting birds.

The difference between now and 12 years ago is night and day.

🐑🐂 Well with the last episode of 'This farming life' airing this week we'd like to thank everyone who sent us kind messages throughout!

In the last episode it focuses a lot on my father, Terence and myself being able to work along side each other. I think we both feel privileged that we get on and are able to work so well together. Its very rare to be able to work all your days beside your father and it is something very special. I hope one day I can have that with my boys as well.

If you ever want to support us:
Why not stay at our pods - Kintyre Glamping Pods
Fill your garden with some homegrown plants- Saddell Nurseries
Or just follow us here to keep up to date with all thats going on the farm.

Having the cameras about was an experience we'll never forget and it will be great time capsule to look back on.

Finally finished cutting the 4 trees out from the silage field. We'll have enough wood for roughly five years! 😂

Father doing a bit of sward lifting.🚜

After a couple wet years the soil has become rather compacted, reducing drainage and grass root growth, the sward lifter breaks up this compaction.
Ideally you would do this is Autumn as it can lead to the fields burning in the Summer, in the vast majority of summers here this is never an issue as we're never without rain for long enough!
We have found that it actually has lead to increased grass growth during Summer for us as the damaged roots regrow deeper.
More often that not we cant get the right ground conditions to do it in Autumn either.
This process should have a lasting effect for probably 3 years.

We had to bring the Highland calves in this week to get a BVD test. New rule came in this year that if you buy in calf cows you have to get the calves tested within 40 days of birth to keep your BVD status.

Next job is to get a halter on them in the next few weeks.
