Today our area has received around 25mm/1 inch of rain,much in intense bursts. We are fortunate to have avoided the worst intensity here. The pictures from Nepal should be equally sobering.

It can't be understated how severe this summer has been for many growers and farmers- but we are lucky enough to have a very productive bore hole and have just about kept our heads above water with irrigation
After the slow start on some crops due to the extreme temperatures earlier in the season, we are now at peak choice in the shop - and particularly have an abundance of tomatoes and french beans

As drought moves to more severe levels across most of England and Cymru have just been again wondering about effect on clover leys. Yes we have chicory and yes we do know about clover roots following the worm holes down but in terms of root nodules,nitrogen and actual biological slow down,or not,what do we think?

We are doing better at Glebelands,with more borehole water at our disposal,but much of this piece applies to Cymru as well. Worth noting new UK PM Burnham has also committed to drill,baby,drill as well as a number of other doom laden plans.

Our squash have met across the rows, stretching their vines to cover the bare soil, their roots spreading below ground in search of water to feed the flowering and swelling fruit. How many they carry to maturity in late September will depend on rain and our management of the soil – a good drink might double the yield but any water we have left must be saved for higher value crops like raspberries and borlotti, lettuce and salad leaves.

Walking the crops in the morning leaves me dangerously optimistic, but by noon leaves are losing turgidity with some wilting by mid-afternoon. We have been applying 20 tonnes of compost per acre, every year, for 10 years. With the help of worms, bacteria, and fungi, some of the compost is broken down in the soil, providing nutrients for our crops but most forms stable, complex, rich humus which binds intimately to the mineral soil – improving structure, moisture, and nutrient-holding capacity. Every 1% increase in organic matter allows an average soil to hold another inch of rain. This drastically reduces the need for irrigation, reduces the risk of flooding downstream, and sequesters carbon.

I am guessing our veg boxes will be thin on salads by mid-August as we make tough choices about which crops to abandon. Even so, we’re the lucky ones – no one will die and as a rich nation (for now at least) shelves will remain stocked with imported produce. We should be in no doubt that collectively, we in the Global North have caused climate catastrophe with our insatiable appetite for fossil fuels and all the stuff we make from them.

I remember walking a shrivelled crop in eastern Kenya with the farmer, a mother of three young children. She had cultivated two acres with a mattock (a pick-like hand tool) to grow maize which, due to failing rains, withered in the fields without producing a single cob. No amount of compost could have saved it. For her, the choice will be which child to feed. Only a sociopathic monster could still advocate “drill baby drill” from a well-watered golf course on the other side of the world.

Dydd Iau/Heatdomes

We will be open on Thursday, with nearly normal service, amidst a very not normal event. While our shop will feel relatively cool, outside conditions will limit what we can do,beyond gush lots of cooling irrigation waters on.
From 250ft down our borehole will be paying back once again with cool,cheap water,enabling lettuces to stay sweet,beans avoid blackfly and transplants thrive.
Climate change events are not a surprise and more are coming. Adapting, planning and stopping climate damaging activities all remain good ideas however tempting the notion that it's all made up, might be. There are very few climate change deniers in the farming community, despite a fair dose of conservatism on many other issues.

What land grabs actually look like close up. Most "settlers" and a lot of IDF soldiers appear to be from Eastern Europe and other non-Middle Eastern origins. Selective use of the Old Testament, Robbie Gibb handclaps and a taste for brutality seem to be the fuel.
