Devil's-bit scabious, doing its late-summer thing — those soft lilac-blue pincushions are one of the last real feasts for bees and butterflies before autumn sets in. Legend has it the devil himself bit off the root out of spite at how useful this plant was to us.

Last course of the season — one date left.

Saturday 19th September is our final smallholding course of the year, and we'd love a full group for it. As far as we know, we're the only one-day beginner smallholding course in Scotland run on a certified organic holding — everything we teach, we practise here ourselves, every day.

"A Regenerative Approach to Small-Scale Farming" is a hands-on day here at The Lint Mill: rare breed sheep, goats and pigs, hens, growing your own food, grassland and soil health — and a home-made organic lunch from our own produce in the middle of it.

Whether you're weighing up your first acreage or already smallholding and want to do it as effectively as possible, this is a good, honest day out in a field with people who've been doing this for almost two decades.

For anyone who is interested in how the drought has been affecting farmers and food producers this year, you might find the article really enlightening.

71% of England is in drought. Two neighbouring fields on the same geology had completely different summers — and the difference arrived with the rain, not the drought.

Digging and drawing.
Colin has spent the afternoon digging a trench for a water pipe to my studio (where I’ll have a sink at last!), whilst I have been working on a drawing for a very large stained glass commission.

That’s the gooseberry wine joining the redcurrant vinegar. Lots of berries in the freezer and still a couple bushes to pick.
