How do you turn a community idea into a sustainable business?

Carrick Greengrocers is a community-owned greengrocer in Carrickfergus town centre. Founded as a Community Benefit Society in 2023, the business has grown to more than 430 member owners while supporting local producers and improving access to fresh food.

In this case study, founding director Lee Robb explains how the business used a co-operative model to raise investment, engage customers and build a sustainable local enterprise.

Earlier this year Sharon took some potatoes, rhubarb and fruit trees as part of our Grow For Us project. And this week we are selling some of Sharon's potato harvest! This variety is called Maiwen and the organic seed potatoes were grown without harmful chemicals. They are great for boiling, steaming, roasting, soups, and making chips or mash. Thanks Sharon!

In July, we received accreditation from The Living Wage Foundation and confirming that we are a Living Wage employer. Paying a decent wage to our staff was one of the very first principles we established so this is a really important moment for us.
