Why do alpacas need shearing?

Alpacas are sheared once a year to keep them healthy, comfortable and safe.

Their fleece is incredibly warm and continues to grow, so without shearing they can overheat during the warmer months. Shearing also helps prevent matting, keeps their skin healthy, and allows us to check their body condition properly.

It may look like a big haircut, but it’s an important part of alpaca care — and their fleece can then be used for natural fibre products.
