Our boy lost his lady in the last winter storms - must have got spooked and not seen since. He is a very dedicated chicken watcher but does long for a lady pea. If anyone knows of any peahens looking for a new mate and a new home do let us know. We have lots of fields for her to roam with our lad.
He is a gentle soul who adopted us and the made his home here. Just look how pretty he is - and he knows it πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

We love edible so-called 'weeds' almost as much as we love this illustration by Kt Shepherd Permaculture

Edible wild plants have been at the forefront of our minds this week because it is...

πŸ’š Be nice to nettles week! πŸ’š

This humble plant plays a critical role in preserving wildlife.

They are known to support at least 40 different insect species πŸ› including some of our more familiar and colourful butterflies and less familiar, but equally beautiful, moths πŸ¦‹ .
The insects that nettles support are often nutritious food for birds πŸ¦… .

Apart from the direct benefits to wildlife, these versatile plants can save us some money if we grow and use them to make our own nitrogen rich nettle fertiliser.

Simply half fill any water tight container with nettles, make up the other half with water, give it an occasional stir … and wait ⏰ After a few days it will have started brewin' and bubblin'.
After another 3-4 weeks strain off the solids to the compost heap and β€œserve” the remaining liquor (it will be smelly, but full of goodness - it's worth it, we promise!). Dilute 1 part nettle fertiliser to ten parts water, and hey presto! Your plants will love it! 🌼

Nettles are also delicious πŸ˜‹

Young nettle tops (picked anytime from early spring to early summer) can be steamed or simmered, like any green vegetable. They are full of vitamins and minerals, but especially iron, so great for your health πŸ’ͺ as well as the health of the earth 🌍

Just make sure you only eat plants that you 100% know the ID of, research their edibility carefully and that they're not somewhere where there is a possibility that they have been sprayed or polluted.

Love and embrace your nettles, and you'll reap the benefits!

Stocked up again - our wee stall has a small selection of raspberry and gooseberry jam, more eggs (I know the ladies are slow - but they are happy and you can taste that in their eggs - when you can get your hands on them πŸͺΊ 🍳) and lots of new seeds to feed your bees and other pollinators 🐝 🌱🌿πŸͺ²πŸ¦‹πŸ₯€πŸͺ»πŸŒ»

Dear Friends and Fans,
do you know what a mycelium is?

Whoever made the movie "Avatar" knew this. The mycelium or mychrysis is a fungus that spreads underground, creating a communication network between all types of plants, a kind of internet that allows them not only to communicate, but also to take care of themselves, protect themselves, eat, to stock up on the water.
And when a tree is cut down from the forest, the mycelium informs a huge number of trees in the forest that one of them is dying, and all the other trees, through the mycelium, start tending to the remaining trunk to try to save that life.
They feed it with water, they protect it, because this dying log is part of the forest family.
Everything has a language.
It is a universal language.
We learn to reconnect with this non-verbal language, realizing that we are all part of one.
We are neither above nor below.
We are like children who still have a lot to learn from our older brothers, from the trees and forests and most of all from our Mother Earth...πŸ’ž πŸŒπŸŒŽπŸŒπŸ’ž
It's just amazing!!! πŸ™β€οΈπŸ™β€οΈπŸ™β€οΈπŸ™

Plant more trees 🌳 🌳 🌲 🌲

Plant trees, here and, there, and everywhere. But don't block your sun too much.

The Lilac Fairy

White May is flowering,
Red May beside;
Laburnum is showering
Gold far and wide;
But I sing of Lilac,
The dearly-loved Lilac,
Lilac, in Maytime
A joy and a pride!
I love her so much
That I never can tell
If she’s sweeter to look at,
Or sweeter to smell.
