Every time we choose imported beef over locally produced NI beef, our farmers, rural communities and local food supply lose out.

Northern Ireland produces enough food to feed up to 10 million people, yet local farming businesses are facing growing pressure from cheaper imports.

Things to remember:
🛑In some countries, hormones are used to finish beef production. A practice that is banned in Northern Ireland due to potential human health implications.

🛑Imported beef can be produced to lower standards than those required in Northern Ireland, particularly in relation to animal health, animal welfare and environmental protection.

🛑In some exporting countries, cattle are finished in large-scale feedlots on grain-based diets rather than predominantly grass-fed systems like NI.

🛑Imported beef often has to travel long distances to reach your plate, resulting in higher carbon emissions.

🛑Imports place downward pressure on local beef prices, negatively impacting the NI beef market and threatening the long-term profitability and sustainability of local beef farms.

Supporting local beef helps protect the future of family farms, rural jobs and food security here at home.
