We've been growing for the last 8 years using no-dig, organic methods on our field near Chepstow. Oakfield Growers is a market garden based just out of Chepstow along the Usk Road. We've been growing using organic methods for the last five years, starting with salad leaves. 2021 is seeing our expansion into a site that we own ourselves. We live on site too, allowing us to expand our range and inve

About 120 calabrese going in for later in the season 🌱

Ground hoed, holes dibbed, plants laid out and tucked in. Finished it off with fleece over the whole row to keep the weather, rabbits and chickens at bay.

Now we wait…

We went on a foraging/recipe course courtesy of Monmouthshire County Council at the weekend: this is the result! This is a salsa verde in the making - nettles, bittercress (weeds from the garden), endive, rocket and red chard - the last three picked out of my mixed salad leaves, which you get included in your veg boxes. This is a great anti inflammatory mixture and it’s going on a baked potato later!

keeping your veg fresh - tips!
How do supermarket veg stay fresh for the 1000+ miles they travel? The simple answer is: chemicals. I asked AI the question 'what chemicals are used to extend a lettuce's life': below is what it said!
I don't use any chemicals on any of my veg, and as a result sometimes my veg will need a little more care than the mass-produced alternative. I put everything in the fridge - anything that is leafy I put into a plastic bag, maybe with a few drops of water. Even if my leaves have been traumatised in my hot car 🥵 they'll soon revive and they'll last the week no problems. Even root crops like beetroot, carrots etc stay harder for longer if bagged and refrigerated. Do let me know if you have any problems and we'll think of a solution!
