Some lovely bottles just in. Here’s a small selection of our choice picks for festive enjoyment..

1. Wilding, Malus (Lot 02)
A rich, complex and completely delicious apple mistelle (pommeau) from Sam and Beccy Leach in Chew Magna, Somerset. Made from a combination of fresh pressed apple juice, cider eau de vie and long aging in old oak casks. This makes an elegant and sophisticated alternative to sherry or port.

2. Find & Foster, Appellation 2021
Methode Traditionelle (champagne method) cider from Polly and Mat Hilton in the Exe Valley, Devon. Made from rare and carefully chosen old Devon apple varieties, the cider spends over two years resting in bottle on the champagne lees before being disgorged. A very fine and sustainable alternative to sparkling wine. A true celebration cider.

3. Bodegas Abeica, Colección de Viñedos
Lively and bright, medium-bodied Rioja with brambly fruit and fine tannins. A crowd-pleaser that’s great for all occasions.

4. JKL Perry Co., Monmouthshire Burgundy
A lovely floral, still perry made from the very rare Monmouthshire Burgundy perry pear (fruit was taken from five 250 year old trees). A perfect aperitif.

5. Terras Do Sur, Albariño
Natural ferment in stainless steel and six months on the lees. This is a perfect Albariño and will make an excellent companion to seafood starters or roast turkey.

6. Find & Foster, Plink
A new release from Find & Foster. This dessert cider was produced by freezing, then thawing the fresh pressed juice prior to fermentation. The result is a rich and sumptuous after dinner treat full of baked apple and spice.

Last week we had the amazing opportunity of travelling to Austria with to visit some of our favourite growers.

Upon arrival we set off from Vienna to Burgenland to meet Michael Andert (1-3) and Judith Beck. This was a lovely introduction as we tried several Andert wines before visiting his ‘Magic Garden’ - a treasure trove of vegetables, herbs and natural wonders. Next we visited Judith Beck (4-5) - a familiar name for anyone who’s visited our shop. Her wines have been firm fixtures since we first opened our doors last June. What a pleasure it was to finally meet Judith, take a tour of her magnificent winery and sample our way through 16 bottles!

The next day we headed south to Styria, near the Slovenian border, to visit Andreas Tscheppe (6-10). The landscape there is stunning, steep rolling vineyards and a patchwork of forests and villages which disappear into the horizon. The weather was on our side too, blue skies and a barmy 20°c… result! It was a privilege to taste through 9 Tscheppe bottles with Andreas. His wines defy easy description - natural, singular, harmonious and highly aromatic. Fine wines that speak clearly of their origins, expressing the soil, microclimate, and the rich biodiversity of the Krepskogel vineyard.

On our final day we headed to Kamptal. Our first stop was a visit to The Austrian Wine Mafia (11-13)- a collaborative project founded by Matthias Warnung and Magdalena and Lorenz Allram. We drove out to their vineyard on the highly prized Heiligenstein before sampling three of their excellent, fresh and vibrant wines.

Our last visit was to Martin and Anna Arndorfer who were getting ready to press Grüner Veltliner (14-17). We had a tour of their beautiful winery and sampled several of their wines (including a lovely welcome pet nat). They’re another grower/producer whose wines we’ve become well acquainted with over the last year or so. They always show a great balance of freshness and texture and it was a real pleasure to experience them at the source.

If you’re new to Austrian wine or simply haven’t explored any yet, now’s the perfect time. Wonderful things are happening there.

Cheers!

Lovely new wines and some shop faves from

1. Barouillet, Bergecrac Rouge 2024 - Bergerac, France

Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Fer Servadou, Malbec, Merille, Merlot

A welcome return of this excellent value table red. This latest vintage is more light-footed than the last, with lovely crunchy bright red fruits and herbal notes. No added sulphur, organic and biodynamic. Perfect for the autumn evenings.

2. l’Epinay, Chardonnay 2023 - Nantes, Loire, France

Chardonnay

Easygoing, organic, Loire valley Chardonnay from the Paquereau brothers. White-fleshed fruits and clean bright citrus acidity. More great value wine for the table.

3. Titch Hill, Dreamhouse 2023 - Worthing, West Sussex, England

Bacchus, Auxerrois, Seyval Blanc, Ortega

Elderflower, lemon and Bramley apple, yes! Fun and easy-drinking, this is their imaginary take on a house wine. Guaranteed to bring enjoyment as we head into the cooler months.

4. Peltier Ravineau, WD-41 - Cheverny, Loire, France

Sauvignon Blanc

New in from the eastern Loire Valley, this is direct-pressed Sauvignon Blanc grown on clay limestone. Cheverny natives Arthur Peltier and Achille Ravineau employ a strong farming-led approach to their wines with a focus on native varieties. Organic in principle with certification to follow.

5. Barouillet, Splash 2023 - Bergerac, France

Semillon

Iconic pet nat! Fragrant, zesty semillon. Green apple, citrus fruits. Zero added sulphur.

Skin macerated macabeo grapes from 70 year old vines. Tropical fruit, some grippy tannin and a nice lick of salt on the finish.

The weather doesn’t look great for the weekend so we’ll be offering this by the glass and thinking about the Mediterranean coast. We’re obstinate like that :)

On 5th September we have Matthew Lake, chef and co-owner of the wonderful .amsterdam coming to cook a four course dinner. Although we’ve kept it under wraps, this has actually been in the works for a little while. Matt first came to visit the shop last December and we hit it off immediately over a few glasses of cider. He came back a couple of months later with co-owners, Valentijn and Lizzy, and several more glasses were enjoyed. This time a plan was hatched to do a special dinner. It will be Matt’s take on the local bounty with arguably the most gastronomic of drinks - cider! We can’t wait! 🍽️🍏🥂👌

Standard ticket - 4 courses + 4 glasses of cider £72

Drivers ticket - 4 courses + 4 samples of cider £55
