What a day yesterday was! 😫

Miguel turned out to be a terrible mother!

Before we had a chance to get back and remove the remaining Indie eggs, one had hatched alongside another MSA. Unfortunately, we were just a few minutes too late as she'd k!lled the Indie duckling and the MSA was stone cold and barely alive 😒

Little one went into my wife's bra to get warm while we went into utter panic mode πŸ˜… Kicked Miguel off the nest, put the remaining Indie eggs under the 2 broody girls, brought the 2 ducklings home & brought the remaining eggs home for the incubator. From the 4 eggs still alive and internally pipped, we have been graced with another beautiful MSA duckling this morning πŸ₯°

Now onto a very positive note!... The little Indie that Miguel hated yesterday has been happily accepted by our mother & daughter duo, Joyce & Aggie πŸ₯° we're keeping everything crossed that they continue to sit on their original eggs as they should hopefully hatch in the coming days 🀞🏻

After a very stressful day yesterday, it's lovely to wake up to some positivity this morning! Now to fight the urge of keeping any! πŸ˜…

What a palavar! πŸ₯΄

Checked on Miguel this morning and the little one is doing good, then out pops a little Indie from underneath her! πŸ–€

So I've often told people that birds can be rac!st but no-one believes me - this morning is a prime example! Miguel hatches a MSA which has yellow down, no problem. An Indie then hatches with mostly black down, hates it and attacks it 😒

We tried taking it away to see if she calls for it, moving it out of the nest in hope she pulls it back, holding it close to her with the other duckling but nope. She doesn't want it 😞

Refer back to a couple of days ago when we said we didn't have the brooders ready... Yeah we do now! πŸ˜‚

Thankfully we've got 2 Indie girls sitting on eggs which are possibly due in the next few days 🀞🏻 After a mad rush to get the brooder setup (I wasn't much use being 1 handed with a duckling up my sleeve πŸ˜…), we popped the little one in the near the eggs and the girls came straight back in with Aggie tucking it underneath her πŸ₯Ή
We're keeping everything crossed that the little one doesn't affect their brood and they continue to sit 🀞🏻

Lesson learnt.. MSA & Indies will be hatching their own in the future! πŸ₯΄

Well, reality just hit us - we only have about a week until our Indie ducklings are due! And we're not even ready for the MSA ducklings to hatch! ... S**t! 😳

❓ Did we get a chance to move the Indie brooder box to a more suitable area? Nope.

❓ Do we have a plan for a brooder extension that is rat proof? Somewhat 🀷🏻

❓ Are we just going to wing it last minute? Absolutely! πŸ˜‚

With 31 eggs cooking away between 3 ducks, you'd think we'd be more prepared this time 🫣

So in the midst of cleaning ponds, Miguel jumped off the nest. Not knowing how far the eggs are away from hatching I took the opportunity to candle them πŸ”¦ (and yes, that is spicy Miguel you can hear telling everyone that she's doing an amazing job! πŸ˜…)

I wish I had our candling torch to show this better, but LOOK AT THOSE LITTLE DUCKLING FEETS!! πŸ₯Ή

Hatching eggs whether it be in an incubator or under a broody is the most amazing experience πŸ₯° we recommend everyone to try hatching at least once, you won't regret it!

🐣 Miniature Silver Appleyard hatching eggs🐣

If you're looking for a nice, compact duck (a little bigger than Calls) that will happily potter around your garden on bug patrol whilst having the sweetest personalities - this is the breed for you!

Since they're a bantam breed;
βœ… They don't eat you out of house and home,
βœ… They don't make as much mess as larger breeds,
βœ… They're super friendly,
βœ… They won't ruin your garden like larger breeds since they're much smaller and lighter,
βœ… They're fantastic for bug patrol πŸ›
βœ… They produce around 160 eggs per year,
βœ… The breed originated in the UK πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Eggs are collected daily to ensure you receive the freshest of eggs. We ensure you have everything you need with a full, step-by-step hatching guide included in our packages, based on our own successful experience.

Although we take pride in our packaging to ensure the safety of our eggs, we cannot guarantee the hatch rate once they have been through the postal system. Once you receive your parcel leave your eggs facing pointed end down for 24hrs at room temperature. This ensures the air sac is attached and settled in the correct position before incubation.

We post nationwide Monday - Thursday via Royal Mail Tracked 24.

Apologies for those that have messaged us and haven't had a response yet, we will be working through messages in the next couple of days 😊

We run The Virtual British Quail Show and judging took place this bank holiday weekend. With just shy of 1000 entries, you can imagine the time it takes to organise, judge & post prizes etc.

πŸ“¨ We'll be returning messages asap, but in the meantime, here's a photo of Valada & Aggie on the nest πŸ–€ started with 18 eggs and this morning we plucked an extra 7 out from underneath them 🀦🏻 no wonder they looked so happy with themselves! πŸ˜…
