We’ve got a bit of a heatwave this week, and the girls have firmly established themselves under the big oak tree. A few hardy souls are still out there power-grazing, but the vast majority were far too comfortable to move.
After a few loud shouts, they finally shifted into gear and were ready to follow us back to the parlour. Lucky for them, we’ve upgraded the engine room with a giant fan and a homemade mister to keep both cows and humans crisp. Five-star spa treatment, incoming! 🌬️💦

A quick Public Service Announcement regarding our Head of Security. 🐶🏷️

By now, most of you are well-acquainted with Pep, but he’s recently developed a bit of a "freelance" habit. If he can’t find enough work to keep him busy at home, he rather likes to follow walkers and cyclists down the lanes to see where they're off to. 🚲🚶‍♂️💨

If you do happen to find him wandering a bit too far from Hatton Farm, please give us a call on the number on his tag. We promise he has a perfectly good job here—mostly involving unauthorised milk consumption and buggy-hijacking—he just occasionally forgets he wasn’t actually invited on your morning stroll! 🥛🦴

Pep has moved on from "tasting" the milk and corn to full-scale nursery supervision. He’s currently ensuring the queue at the feeder stays in an orderly line and that no one is skipping their breakfast.

He takes the job remarkably seriously for someone whose primary qualification is "unauthorised snacking." 🥛🐶

Maximum concentration required 👀

Our fresh bottle delivery arrived this week and forklift skills had to be 10/10. It's a slightly nerve-wracking job moving this much glass at once, but we made it through without a single breakage.

The vintage bottles can be retired until the next time someone doesn't order glass in time 🫢

Normal shiny service is resumed ♻️🥛

We've got a new bit of high tech wizardry in the yard this week. Our brand new auto sorting gate is officially up and running! It works by scanning the electronic EID tags in the girls ears, automatically drafting them if they need checking over, breeding or treatments.

Everyone is getting a turn at being drafted to check the EIDs are matched up correctly. Today was the turn of cows with numbers between 2 and 200.

The humans are absolutely thrilled because it's going to save an immense amount of manual drafting legwork. The cows, however, were left looking a bit bewildered by the detour and wondered why they weren't taking the usual direct route back to fresh grass!

The data is all checking out nicely and they were all back in the paddock shortly after ☘️

🏔️ HUGE GOOD LUCK to our brilliant herdsperson, Jess! 🏔️

Jess is part of a fantastic team taking on the incredible challenge of trekking Machu Picchu, all to raise vital funds for The DPJ Foundation.

We are sharing this photo from one of her training walks a few weeks ago—she has been putting in some serious miles to get ready for the Andes!

Mind you, we are silaging this week 🚜 some people will do anything to get out of sheeting the pit 😉

Seriously thought, we are so incredibly proud of her dedication to supporting mental health in agriculture.
