I don't suppose anyone has an old oil drum that they want to get rid of that I could use for a project? Doesn't need to be pretty but still needs to be water tight.
Don't worry its not for honey 😆!!
Happy to collect.
Thanks

A couple of weeks ago we went out for a tiny swarm that had made home in a gas combi boiler.

Often with these small cast swarms there will normally be a virgin Queen or in some cases no Queen at all. We were pleased today to find a healthy looking Queen that if you look closely in the picture has already started laying eggs into cells.

A virgin Queen will fly off to get mated with drones from other colonies and once mated will remain fertile for the next 3-4 years, using the s***m stored inside her abdomen to lay in the summer month 2-3000 eggs a day.

We mark our Queens to help find them in the colony and use a different colour each year to identify her age, 2026's colour is white. Thanks to Emily McCoy who has taken over as chief Queen marker!

Bit of an usual swarm call today.
This little colony had started to make home in the internals of a gas combi boiler, a first for us to see.
Now collected and rehomed in the isolation Apiary where we will check them to find out if they are Queen right and disease free.

Two call outs for swarms today, the first turned out to be Bumble Bees, the second trip was this lovely swarm of well mannered bees.
Caught from an awkward position in a hedge and rehomed back at the quarantine apiary where they will be checked over the coming weeks for a healthy laying Queen and no signs of disease.
If you come across a swarm of bees drop us a message and we will always do our best to help.

First swarm collection of the year this afternoon at a local church. Managed to time it just right as they were thinking about taking up residence in a void in the wall through an air brick.
Now safely rehomed and taken to be quarantined to check for disease over a couple of brood cycles before they are moved to the main apiary.

It's the time of year where bee populations will try to expand by producing swarms to create new colonies. These swarms are often good natured but can sometimes end up in an inconvenient location.
Here at Forest of Dean Honey we will do our best to collect swarms if in a practical location to do so or endeavour to put you in touch with another bee keeper who might be able to help. Please contact us via messenger if you have a swarm related issue and if possible attach a photo if you can safely do so.

Even when on holiday in Rhodes I might be accused of finding something bee related to drag Anna and Emily around, a Bee Museum was too hard to resist! 😆 🤣
If anyone is ever visiting the island then its well worth experiencing, plenty to see and do plus a great range of honey related products.
The bee keeping equipment sold is less than 2/3 of the price of the UK but I have a feeling that I will be told that we have to take our clothes home with us rather than wax foundation. 😔 😟

With the sun shining it was our first proper look in the hives this year.
With some commercial bee keepers reporting losses of 40% of colonies this winter we can be glad that we had nowhere near those figures with the vast majority making it through the Winter.

The first checks of the year is only a relatively brief one due to the cool night time temperatures and the loss of heat during the inspection.

We look for a laying Queen, eggs, larvae and capped brood. We also have to check that there is adequate stores to maintain a rapidly expanding hive as the nectar flow is only just starting.

Fingers crossed for some decent weather as the hedgerow flowers start and the dandelions start to open.

This will be the start of weekly checks ongoing to probably September.
