Cockburnspath and Cove

Cockburnspath and Cove Welcome to the vibrant community of Cockburnspath & Cove situated on the east coast of the Scottish Borders. The Village today is small but busy!

For more information on our village, please visit our website: www.copathandcove.com Cockburnspath is a beautiful and small community situated on the east coast of the Scottish Borders. We are on the border between East Lothian and the Borders and are ideally positioned between Scotland's capital city of Edinburgh in the north and the historic town of Berwick - Upon - Tweed in the south. We are a

coastal village which is popular with many tourists and surfers. We have the stunning coastline as well as being a short distance from the John Muir Way. Cockburnspath is the end of the popular Southern Upland Way beginning in Portpatrick in the West and concluding right here, in Cockburnspath. From Cockburnspath the John Muir Way can be followed for around 9 miles along the East Lothian coast to Dunbar for anyone wanting to catch a train. The area of Cockburnspath has many archeological remains which indicate it has been lived and fought over since the Bronze Age. It lies close to the old invasion route from England into Scotland. The name of our village has changed since even earlier that 1128! Cockburnspath was initially called Kolbrandr, where the name has changed to what it is known as now (Cockburnspath) and most commonly known as Co'path. Cockburnspath was very much a place where people worked the land, traded it and forfeited it as well as building upon it. This is still commonly some activities in Cockburnspath with farms surrounding the village and having estates in the imminent geography. The village has many events and projects taking place all year round including our Community Cafe, Gala Day, Annual Flower Show, Coffee Mornings, Computer Workshops, Art Exhibitions, Meditation, Worship and so much more. We have great facilities including our Village Hall, Primary School, Village Store, Bowling Club, Church, Church Hall and Football Field. Cove is a natural harbour which was improved in 1831 by the building of a break water. The harbour is privately owned. The village of Cove has been described as having more of a Cornish than Scottish air about it. Cove is largely homes and holiday homes with Pease Bay Leisure Park nearby and Cockburnspath just under one mile away. Nearby beaches include Pease Bay and Thornton Loch which are both great for surfing. ❌️We're very sad to share that the Cockburnspath Primary School and Nursery playgrounds were subject to vandalism last weekend❌️

Property was damaged, play equipment broken, and the area left unsafe for the school to use on Monday.

🚫School are now asking that children do not use the school grounds outwith school hours🚫

Sadly, we are also having to consider whether to pause planned investment to improve the school play areas, that was due to commence over the summer thanks to funding by the Cockburnspath and Cove Community Benefit Fund. We really want to continue this important work to enrich our spaces for young people, but need to have confidence that the facilities are safe.

We encourage everyone to have constructive conversations with your young people about caring for our community's assets. Thank you to PC Cameron who led a brilliant session at School on the impact of vandalism, highlighting the need for respect, responsibility and pride in our school and community.

❓️If you have any information, please contact the School on 01368 830333, or Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number PS-20260611-0795

Branxton Substation enabling works

To complete the new A1 slip road the temporary traffic barrier must be removed to tie in the new road. This requires night shift working from 16th to 18th June. Works will be completed as quickly as possible, and steps will be taken to minimise noise.

Forthcoming works include progressing the 3km haul road to the Branxton substation site, which crosses public roads at three locations. To support construction of these junctions (including signage, road widening and resurfacing), road closures have been agreed with East Lothian Council as follows:

Location 2: Lawfield Road – 11th June to 5th July

Location 3: ZU215 – 4th to 27th August

Location 4:C121 – 19th August to 13th September

C121 road widening requires a closure at Location 5: 14th September to 12th October

As construction on the project continues, SPEN will continue to carefully phase activities to minimise disruption and work closely with the community - ensuring residents are kept informed.

SPEN appreciate the community's patience during these works and encourage people to contact the [email protected] email address with any questions.
