Its about time after a very hot summer I invited people to come for a walk & talk around our rewilding field.

I am more than happy to talk drought, flood, fire. Everything that is now sadly happening in the extream and what we can do that is positive too. Plus the cuppa and biscuits at the end are always a chance to stop, reflect and chat.

And they are off! In fact the release happened a few days ago. They are being fed still but I think the majority of them have decided to just take off into the wide blue yonder, probably with their best friends. I am still hearing quite a few Tawnys at night though so there must be some haning around, especially in the trees at the front of the property.

I hope they live long and have many owlets! And if you have a tree with a hollow in it or a lovely large, tall grand tree please think carefully before you tidy it up! We need the scale and the old trees. Hollow trees are not a sign of ill health but the clever way a tree extends it life span by litterally lightening its frame so it is less likley to be blown over in a storm. The broken down material then feeds the tree too. So flipping clever and we think we know best...

Yesterday I welcomed these babies. We counted them out of the carriers to make sure we had them all! See Owls and Birds of Prey Rescue Suffolk & Essex - Stephanie Callister-Jarrold post for the finer details and note their names are where they were found so if you happen to live in Borely or Gosfield an amazing person rescued one these cuties and got them to Stephanie where they have been raised to adulthood with lots of new siblings!

I will get some photos and some videos if I can to show you their new living accomodatation before they are released back into the wild. And every time I walk past the aviary now 20 eyes silently track my every move..... 😆👀

Rewilding / conservations areas / growing plants in your garden helps to put the water back into the soil when it rains and minimises water loss when it does not. The water table is higher in these areas than it is in areas devoid of cover be it longer grasses or trees and of course concrete.

Wildfires are started by people deliberately or leaving litter in the countryside. Sometimes they are complete accidents such as when farmers are trying to get a harvest in to feed us all or as happened near us recently a bird flew into a power line. Wildfires tend to start in areas where people have access to open space.

Wildfires are taking hold and are now worse when they start because our underlaying water table is so low and the countryside is ‘tinderbox dry’. We are emptying our underground reserves of water and lowering the water table. Our summers are hotter now than they ever were - this is proven – scientifically.

So what I am doing here is creating an area for nature and for humans. One which will improve the soil, create a refuge for the insects that are vital for life on earth.
