This makes me happy: the hedgerow is marching out! The path around the rewilding field, the Outback, is set back from the hedge so allow the hedge to grow out into the field this way and thicken . Many birds who need a thicket of branches around them at least 8m deep. This include birds like Nightingales and if a pair ever chooses to make their home here I would be so very happy! At the moment the field is stunning. I just LOVE the Blackthorn. It's an amazing shrub, tough and beautiful with amazing sloes for gin making in Autumn!

Such a lovely surprise today walking around our rewilding field. Both the Frittilary and Tulip are native and yes I did pop a few in the ground. It's the first time the Fritilary has showed her face. The Tulips took a year off last year in the dry weather but they are back and I am delighted! 🌼

Spring is really blooming so its a great time to tell everyone about guardianship of our ‘Rewilding the Outback Project’

It’s a simple concept really. We arrived with the ambition of simply putting something back. Enabling nature and soil recovery in a corner of Essex over 20 acres. A contribution to combating UK biodiversity loss and climate change. A positive action and we would love you to join us in the journey.

Why join as a guardian? Well, of course everything costs money and we put a lot of time and money into the project. We have made purchases, such as the prerelease aviary, the eco beehive and trees to introduce different species. Primarily its time. Time cutting some areas to create a meadow. Monitoring, hedge laying, pulling up plastic, looking after the ponds. So, yes every penny really helps.

But also this is something we enjoy sharing because its important for people to see positive things happening and to learn about them and why they are important. Over the 5 years we have been doing this to date the business who have joined have enjoyed coming out to visit us. Bringing their team for mornings walk or afternoons work, followed by a piece of cake. They have learnt something new and a complete change in scenery offers the chance for connection and conversations they cannot take place in the work environment. So if you want to stay longer and be 'left alone' for a meeting that is not a problem.

If you would like to join us and then schedule in a date to visit you would be so welcome. There is a link in the bio in insta to our guardianship page with more information or do email us or just PM me now!

Well apparently it's now a good Idea.

We have planted (just in time weather wise) native silver birch trees. We will coppice them to encourage multi stems and in time we will harvest them for timber. Yes it will take time, but it will pay off for us or for those who live here after us. In the meantime the trees will provide more habitat for wildlife and shade the ground from the sun.

After our oil boiler packed up we looked hard at the options. ATM the various other eco options don't work for our house. So we installed an Ecco Stove this is a super dooper efficient burner that radiates the heat radiating it out 12 hours post burn. Its great.

But logs are expensive and frankly I think too many trees are being condemned to harvest the logs. So we are growing some. Yes we have a field, but in previous houses we had a garden easily large enough for 1-3 trees of this species and when coppiced they never get that tall. Here we have planted them in a mini agroforestry style.

In the current global circumstances this small act is giving us hope and we are starting to take control of our own heating. No, not everyone can do this, but if those who can do it then there would be less strain on national supplies. Plus the birds will love you for the tree you plant.

We bought these trees from the

Finally, we don't just do bunches and workshops. Sustainable funeral flowers are an honour to make and weddings are fun and I love an ecofriendly bride who cares where her flowers come from and their impact on the environment. Take a look at the late February wedding bouquet delivered just last week. I am always happy to answer any questions, just send a message.

Human survival is inextricably linked with a heathy natural world with every single creature (bar ourselves) playing their part in a balanced eco system. Not cutting your hedge from March to August allows our native birds to nest. It’s a really easy thing not to do so please give the birds in your hedge, using your tree a chance this year.
“In 2024, the combined bird species indices for the UK and England continue to show an overall decline. Since 1970, populations of wild birds have declined by almost one fifth in both the UK and England.”
https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/wild-bird-populations-in-the-uk/wild-bird-populations-in-the-uk-and-england-1970-to-2024

We have finished hedge laying. Hedge laying in this way has many benefits for wildlife:
🐦It creates a dense low bottomed hedge which is perfect shelter for little birds and small mammals to nest in safety.
🐦‍⬛It prolongs the life of the hedgerow plants to as they have evolved to respond and re grow natural pruning by herbivores.
🐣For humans it makes a living stock proof hedge, better than fencing which needs trees to be felled and wire / nails / concrete etc made. All of which use create carbon.

Thank you so very much to Dave, Tim & Jody for your help over January and February. Between us we have eaten quite a lot of cake and made great progress! 🙏

Another really really wet start to the year and the ghost ponds really can't take anymore water. It actually took an awfully long time after drying out so much of at least 5 months of 0 rain to even start holding water again.

After Christmas the deluge across the country started and I am pleased to say that these ponds are working hard holding water at the top of the hill and preventing at least this much water from making it's way down the valley and into the river and exacerbate the flooding. This is This type of low cost intervention along with and in urban areas makes a massive difference to flood and then later in the year drought prevention.

I could swim in this now and my feet would not touch the bottom. Another day me think's though! 😆
