Yesterday I welcomed these babies. We counted them out of the carriers to make sure we had them all! See Owls and Birds of Prey Rescue Suffolk & Essex - Stephanie Callister-Jarrold post for the finer details and note their names are where they were found so if you happen to live in Borely or Gosfield an amazing person rescued one these cuties and got them to Stephanie where they have been raised to adulthood with lots of new siblings!

I will get some photos and some videos if I can to show you their new living accomodatation before they are released back into the wild. And every time I walk past the aviary now 20 eyes silently track my every move..... 😆👀

Rewilding / conservations areas / growing plants in your garden helps to put the water back into the soil when it rains and minimises water loss when it does not. The water table is higher in these areas than it is in areas devoid of cover be it longer grasses or trees and of course concrete.

Wildfires are started by people deliberately or leaving litter in the countryside. Sometimes they are complete accidents such as when farmers are trying to get a harvest in to feed us all or as happened near us recently a bird flew into a power line. Wildfires tend to start in areas where people have access to open space.

Wildfires are taking hold and are now worse when they start because our underlaying water table is so low and the countryside is ‘tinderbox dry’. We are emptying our underground reserves of water and lowering the water table. Our summers are hotter now than they ever were - this is proven – scientifically.

So what I am doing here is creating an area for nature and for humans. One which will improve the soil, create a refuge for the insects that are vital for life on earth.

Eventually we have a marginal pond plant. It's taken a while in the the ghost pond but it's the start of good things to come for biodiversity in a little bit of north Essex!

A view of the Outback this morning. You can tell from my narrative I am worried! It does look beautiful but as I posted this we are around 33 degrees as it cools a little at 5pm! The heat is intense and the wind hot. The berries are all ripening quickly. Berries used to ripen at the end of summer into Autumn. What will the birds do if they can't feed and build up fat just before winter?... At the very least please don't cut your hedges. They won't like the hair cut in this weather and the birds really need the food and moisture in the fruit.

My oaks are growing and I feel so much more comfortable in this landscape which I understand and love than a city. The irony is I want to feel comfortable in a city but I am a fish out of water and very uncool and always have been. I walk around the city streets loving it when I find an oasis of green where I feel instantly calmer and cooler. I notice the lone tees in the street scape and note how they are punching above their weight both as visual relief and habitats for city birds. I really feel for them as they have a tough life with little water, surrounded by concrete and tarmac and in polluted air which they are busy cleaning up for everyone.

Here, my oaks are self seeded, growing fast, have space and siblings and indeed a mother oak for support. Very lucky oaks!

This week i will be releasing Stratford the Kestrel and I do have some rewilding walk and talks coming up if you would like to see the oaks for yourself. They are on my website..see the eventay page. I will try and look rewilding trendy! 😚

Another warm morning and Dave and I were out at 8am for a couple of hours working on one of the now very dry ghost ponds which unfortunately has an non native invasive pondweed. Australian Swap Cress. It probably arrived on the feet of a duck. It was sold in garden centres as a pond plant until it was banned in 2014. It is damaging to freshwater biodiversity and of course we don't have any animals that control it in the UK.

The advice is to wait untill you have low water levels and then dig it out. Well we do have 0 water now and so we dug out all we could. Its bagged (no composting) I will give it time to die further in the bag then burn it. Hopefully we can keep it under control. TBH of the myriad of jobs to do here this is not one I anticipated or wanted to add to the workload!
