Crapes Fruit Farm

Crapes Fruit Farm Our shop is currently open Fridays and Saturdays. From Stansted (M11) – just 30 miles. Our address is Rectory Road, Aldham, Colchester, Essex CO6 3RR.

For veg box deliveries and collection go to crapesfruitfarm.ooooby.org

We grow a variety of fruit and vegetables which are chemical-free, affordable & good for our soil. Crapes Fruit Farm is located just five miles west of Colchester, Essex, and only one mile north of Marks Tey Railway Station, within easy reach of the A12. Telephone: 01206 212375. Our peaceful, family orchard of fifteen acres is

rich with a range of birds (skylark, wren and woodpecker, for example), insects (including dragonflies), and plant life. We also see deer, stoats and many rabbits, living in the orchards. Some of the insects and bats that inhabit the premises are predators of aphids and other fruit pests, helping to keep down the population of unwanted, fruit-harming wildlife! Andrew, the eldest of the third generation of Tanns at the farm, is dedicated to the production of apples – which taste like apples should. Crapes Fruit Farm has a collection of many varieties of apple which was compiled by Andrew’s father, John Tann. These include very traditional and lesser-known varieties such as Blenheim Orange and D’arcy Spice. During production, our trees are treated with no chemicals. Residual herbicides, chemicals to regulate tree growth or even to delay fruit maturity are not used, nor are agents to improve skin finish. After picking, the apples are NOT immersed in chemicals prior to storage, neither are they washed, waxed or polished – we leave that to you! The most important decision of the year is to harvest the fruit on the right day. Flavour in any fruit is determined before it is picked, as is its ability to store. However, our season begins in July – the early blossoming of some varieties this spring may be reflected with an earlier picking/maturity date than average – this we have yet to discover! Once picked, our apples are stored in plain, cold air – not in a gas controlled environment. We aim to provide you with fruit that will store successfully in your own basement or garage (mice permitting). Remember that very large apples are unlikely to store well. Apples in the range of 4 – 6 per pound or 9 – 13 per kilograms keep best. Very wet summers often reduce the time that an apple stays crisp once picked even if cold stored. As well as apples, cherries, plums, quince, medlars and a range of vegetables are available in their season from our farm shop. Throughout the season we have vegetables such as beans, courgettes, tomatoes, squash, sweetcorn, leeks, onions and cabbages. Early August shows the first of a new season of apples, ready for both eating and cooking. Later in August the plums will be available, and in November the medlars are ready also. Our apples are usually on sale through until late March, both to customers visiting the farm, and for those opting to receive fruit by post. Various other fruits previously mentioned can be sent, during their season, by post. During the season, fruit is offered for sale to visitors to the farm and to consumers all over the UK. If you are looking for a tray or box of fruit to collect, please contact us ahead so that it is ready for you ‘by arrangement’ – or feel free to telephone to find out what is available at any given time. This season we expect to have a range of plums and some gages available to send out during August. Please remember: we are closed on Sundays.

Farm Update

We are really struggling to keep every thing watered! In the past the average days in England above 30 degrees was usually 6 days a year, we are going to have that many in just this week.

This week we've done lots of sowing, our last Summer lettuce succession and last french beans (these one will go in the tunnel). We've also sown some autumn winter crops like Raddichio, Red Kale and more Cavolo Nero.

On the plots we are clearing beds in preparation for late brassica planting. I'm also mowing around the orchard with a flail mower on the tractor. I'm not going to cut everywhere though because we have some beautiful meadow-like areas that are full of butterflies. Before I mow our second field I'm clearing some of the dwarf rootstock Cox trees, they've become unproductive so we are setting up a second agroforestry plot there, with more vegetables and a mix of new fruit trees.

Farm Update

We survived the heatwave, as did our veggies! We had to wait till it cooled off on Sunday to do some more planting - Red Cabbage, Brussels Sprouts and the next succession of Lettuce and French Beans. Things will really benefit from this cooler weather.

I've been busy this morning, not sideshooting tomatoes as I planned, but being a plumber and fixing a leak in the mains water - one of the joys of being a farmer (you have to be a jack of all trades!).

We've been getting on top of the weeds on the veg plots this week and are planning ahead for our early brassicas to come out and late brassicas will go in their place (cabbage, kohl rabi, pak choi and calabrese beds will be replaced with Purple sprouting broccoli, savoy cabbage and kale) we expect to plant these the last week of July.

Late brassicas prefer cool autumn weather, but because they are so slow growing you have to plant them in Summer. Unfortunately with this, comes Summer stress and pests. My seedlings have already been attacked by Flea Beetle (a tiny jumping black insect that likes it dry and hot, they pepper the leaves with holes but can easily kill tiny seedlings). We are trying to save the plants by potting them on but may have to re-sow.

Main crop carrots will be drilled this week. We decided to sow our main crop beetroot in modules, so that will be planted out in a few weeks.

Crapes Delivery List Friday 16th January and Farm Update

Today I'm pruning some very old Worcester Pearmain trees in Suffolk. Planted in the 1940s by German prisoners of war, they planted several trees together in one hole - giving the trees a very unique look and shape. They are certainly keeping my brain stimulated and my arm busy on this very wet January day!

The apple season is now finished, anyone subscribed to a Fruit and Veg box will be swapped to a standard veg box.

Have fruit trees of your own? I am available for pruning work throughout January and February - contact me on 07508182911 or [email protected].

**Farm Update **
A bit warmer this week, obviously I’m off-site quite a lot pruning. Hopefully I’ll get time to prune some of our trees! This week I’ve been clearing the brambles up under the trees – this makes picking easier and helps with air flow and moisture.

We’ve also begun putting the first poly tunnel up, we had a few teething problems as it’s a 2nd hand tunnel (we had to buy new ground poles and they only JUST fit!)

In these (still!) long evenings I’ve been working on this year's crop rotation and getting my seed orders ready – our first seeds will be germinated on the heated bench at Bennison in just a few weeks time - Spring Greens, Pak Choi, Lettuce, Salad, Perpetual Spinach. We’re already getting excited for the season to come

Farm Update
For the next two months I'll be doing some off-site pruning, as well as at the Farm. Contact me if you have your own fruit trees and would like them pruned. (this time of year I can do apple, pear and quince).

There's not much you can do when the ground is frozen and everything's covered with an (albeit thin) layer of snow. We opted for a good job to keep warm yesterday - turning the compost heap. We usually turn our compost heaps once - this homogenises everything together and puts the least decomposed material from the outside, into the center of the heap. As we rebuild it we focus on getting a nice even shape with as straight sides as possible - to maximise volume to surface area ratio. The bottom half was already really good looking compost, I look forward to putting it down on our veg plots in Spring!

Our short break still continues till Friday, but it was a surprise "all hands on deck" on Monday when we found out our wood delivery was turning up - 15 tonnes of 3m Sweet Chestnut rounds - which Jacob and Margot will be splitting for using as fence posts and gate-building material (part of our Rural England Prosperity Grant).
When we are back in the new year our focus will be pruning and putting up the first of our new tunnels.

Farm Update

We have had a wonderful crop this year, the best crop we've had since Emily and I met - what a gift on the year we take stewardship of Crapes Farm. Thank you to all those who have supported us and enjoyed the delicious fruits of Crapes. It feels a little sad for the apple season to be ending so soon, but it makes way for other projects and future crops. We are less than a fortnight from the shortest day now, so Spring and all its beauty (and busyness!) is only round the corner.

After a short break over Christmas we will be back to our Friday deliveries, we will carry on for as long as we can without having another break (with some support from Bennison Farm.)

Winter will be still a busy time, Bramble clearing, Tree pruning, clearing for poly tunnels and putting up our new fence - we are just awaiting a delivery of local chestnut which we will split into stakes.

*Farm Update*

I've made this weeks veg box and list very simple, not only because it will be busy next week with Christmas order, but because I am on the Norfolk/Suffolk Borders - on the banks of the Waveney - recording a new album with The King Driscolls!

Ella and Keller are holding the fort at the farm, tidying up for winter and getting our fantastic crop of swede and celeriac into storage.

The greenhouse is nearly down, thanks in part to Emily's father Mick, who has been a great help, cracking on even on the most miserable of days!

Plans for the first of our new tunnels are slowly moving forward.
We did our last pressing of apple juice on Sunday, when this batch is gone - its gone!

In terms of apples will now have only Sturmer Pippin available for a few weeks, and when those run out, apple season will come to an end. It's been fantastic, such a gift for our first year as stewards of Crapes. We will strive to do all we can to help next year be another good one - but when it comes down to it sometimes you just have to cross your fingers and hope!

*Farm Update*

We've been juicing today! I had some help from a friend and we got to use the new pasteurizer! We did three different batches, the Tydeman's Late Orange and Bramley is particularly delicious.

Tydeman's is a lovely apple, bred from Cox and Laxton Superb in 1930s at East Maling, it tends to be biennial (crop every other year) unless thinned (picking off some of the small fruitlets just after they set). If it isn't thinned the fruit ends up being quite small - fine for juicing though!

East Maling was a horticultural Research Station in Kent set up in the 1910s and was famed for apple breeding as well as other fruit species such as strawberries.

You may be familiar with apple "rootstocks" - a different variety of apple, bred for its root vigour, onto which a variety is "grafted". Many of the rootstocks you see in nursery and garden centres have an M at the beginning (e.g. M9, M26). This stands for Maling, as they were collected, catalogued and renamed by Ronald Hatton at the Research Station.

The rootstocks were gathered from all over, each one with its own history, M9 for example used to be known as Jaune de Metz and originates from France from at least the 1800s, probably much earlier. Each rootstock has a different amount of vigour (i.e. the speed and strength at which it grows) and this is how the height of the tree can be determined. M9 only grows to a very small height, M25 gets much larger.
