🌿A busy one in the garden today! 🌿
Everything has had a good feed to keep those plants producing, and we’ve had to redo the sunflower supports as the heads are getting so heavy they’re starting to lean over. 🌻
A little deadheading was needed too, keeping everything looking tidy and encouraging more flowers.
We also cut down the sunflowers that had finished flowering and were already starting to lean. Rather than losing all those lovely seeds, we’ve propped them up on the trellis so the birds can perch and enjoy them. 🐦🌻
The garden is definitely starting to show signs of the season changing, but there’s still plenty growing, flowering and feeding the wildlife. 💚

🌱 Kitchen Garden update 🌱

The garden is very grateful for the recent showers of rain 🌧️💚
The sunflowers are reaching for the sky, the dahlias are looking amazing, and the squash are swelling nicely.
Not everything is looking quite so perfect though… the kale has been absolutely ravaged by flea beetle 🐛🙈 A reminder that even in the best gardens, something is always getting munched!
Some of the flowers are starting to slow down now, but there’s still plenty happening out here as we head towards the end of summer. 🌿

🌱 An early morning harvest before the heat of the day🌱
Taken to the kitchen this afternoon.
There’s something rather special about watching something grow, picking it at its best, and then seeing it become part of a dish. From garden to plate. 💚

🌱 Kitchen garden update 🌱

August has definitely arrived in the kitchen garden and things are growing fast — despite the lack of rain!

🎃 The squash are taking off, with one of our self-seeded plants making its way up through the tall Jerusalem artichokes! We’re still guessing what some of these mystery squash might turn out to be. 😂

🌽 The corn is nearly ready
🌸 The dahlias are producing masses of flowers
🥬 The mangelwurzels are almost ready to harvest
🌿 And the herbs are looking very happy

Plus, plenty of beautiful edible flowers making their way out of the garden and into the kitchen. 🌼

Squash is also featuring on menus this week, with Cajun roasted squash, pickled fennel and marinated feta salad 🥗

🌱 Most people think bolting means the end of the radish harvest… but not here.

When the weather gets too warm, radishes stop putting energy into their roots and instead shoot up to produce flowers and seed pods.

The best part? Those crunchy seed pods are completely edible. They have the same peppery kick as the radish itself and are delicious pickled.

So instead of pulling them out, we've decided to grow some of our radishes specifically for their seed pods.

We like doing things a little differently in the garden—finding new ways to enjoy what nature gives us, rather than fighting against it.🫜🌱
