Lovely day in the garden - first this year.

I cleared an area and planted out a few things which had been sheltering in the cold frame from recent atrocious weather - Angel's Fishing Rods which I had grown from seed provided by William and Sheila from their garden plants in Cullybackey; Hellebores (one of Ann's favourites) which I bought a few weeks ago from Homebase in Bangor. (I got one tray of them free when I pointed out that they had dried out and were about to die - they all survived my TLC!)

Early-planted sweet pea are coming along nicely by a window in the 'grey shed'.

There's still a lot of clearing and pruning to be done but hopefully some better weather will facilitate that.

Wee bumble bee enjoying some ragweed in the field. For some time I've been wondering if ragweed is an annual or a perennial. I recently got around to investigating this and find that common ragweed is an annual. Ragweed is poisonous to farm livestock (not that I have any now). Back in the day landowners were required to maintain their fields ragwort free. 'Ragweed inspectors' were employed to ride around the countryside on especially high push bikes to look over roadside hedges and detect any ragweed. Last year I chopped off the ragwort flower heads before they set seed. As a result, and because ragwort can only survive the winter as seeds, and not as existing plants, there are many fewer plants than last year. I'll leave the flowers for the insects for a while yet, but will again remove them before they set seed for this year. They say it takes 10 years to create a wildflower meadow. This is year three. 😁
