To hoe or not to hoe?

Hoeing works best in dry conditions when the weeds are at the cotyledon stage.

These plants have been in the ground for over a week and a half. They have established well but the first flush of weeds have germinated.

I've taken a risk and run the mechanical hoe through these six rows and it seems to have done a good job. The weeds may come back but at least I have knocked them back a week.

As soon as it looks as if we have a few dry days ahead of us, I will repeat the process. It really only takes 5 minutes, so better to be safe than sorry.

The official countdown to 21st June has started 😭

The longest day traditionally signals the end of the asparagus harvest.

From that date, the young shoots are left to grow into tall ferns, which will feed the crown fire the remainder of the summer. The energy they produce, feeds the crown and gives it the resources to produce 90 days of cutting next spring.

The beauty of seasonal harvest is that it builds expectations and hope. The fact that we can cut and sell the same day exemplifies the unique flavour of asparagus.

ASPARAGUS SALE! 25%OFF
As it happens, Asparagus has similarities with mad dogs and Englishmen!
The hot weather has provided a flush of Asparagus and for the rest of this week, we are offering 25% off the usual price to help clear the extra production.

We love to sell out every day, so that customers know their asparagus is less than a day old. It makes such a difference to taste and quality.

Excess production is made into soup to sell in our farm shop cafe.

A few customers have just been into our farm shop (12:30) to say that National Grid has cut a pipe in Crewkerne, and Waitrose and other shops have closed until it is fixed.

We remain open for trading.

Preparation for show, Orchards and Cider Section.

It's going to be thirsty work this week, so make sure you visit the centre of British Cider.

A huge entry of Ciders and Apple Juice.

Become a judge yourself at the People's Choice cider competition.

The show runs from Thursday to Saturday this week and the weather looks set to be hot and dry ☀️☀️☀️
