As we look to expand our catalogue it has become more and more obvious that there is a big round leafy hole to fill. So last year we set up a big cabbages trial and inspired by the work they are doing at Solhatt økologiske frø we decided that the majority of the trial was to be made up made up of Norwegian varieties.

Our often wet and windy, cooler maritime climate as well as long summer days are similar to Norway and there are still also some old, well adapted, varieties remaining across the north sea.

By the end of the summer, we had a favourite and in late Autumn we chose one variety to store overwinter, selling the rest to local veg box scheme .

The cabbage heads were stored by hanging them in an old cow shed, they were covered with fleece in very cold weather and throughout the winter, we periodically removed the outer leaves to prevent the heads from rotting.

Finally, last week we planted the heads out where they will eventually produce seeds later in this year. Keep your eyes peeled for a new Norwegian cabbage variety this Autumn!

As the soil warms up and the days get longer, this is the time of year when we start to transplant our biennial seed crops into the polytunnel. These crops were sown last spring/summer and have been overwintering in a variety of ways, waiting to be planted out.

Before planting, to ensure the best seeds, we take time to select only the best roots by looking at shape, size, colour and health. This can mean that we may only plant around 10% of the total crop. These plants will flower throughout the summer and we will hopefully be harvesting lots of seeds from them this Autumn.

We recently had a visit from presenter Mark Stephan from the programme 'Out of Doors'. '

We talked about lots of stuff from tomato seeds to piles of 💩. It was on the radio this morning, you can listen to the interview now on BBC Sounds - 14/02/26.

It may not feel like it, but there are signs spring is on the way 😁.

The Pebble Trust supported Seeds of Scotland to recruit an intern and to build a 'winnow wizard', creating UK ready plans, so that others can do the same.

You can read all about them and download the plans from the blog 'Planting career seeds, winnowing grain' at https://www.thepebbletrust.org/planting-career-seeds-winnowing-grain/

We think you'll agree it was funding well spent.

If you are interested in northern seed purchasing, now is a good time of year to do it, and Seeds of Scotland have an excellent selection at https://www.seedsofscotland.com

Aubergine seeds! A very exciting late addition to this year’s seed catalogue. This variety is called ‘Diamond’.

Not known as great crop for the Highlands, we weren't sure Aubergines would ever make it onto our catalogue. However after plenty of testing and trialing we came across 'Diamond' and haven't looked back. We have been growing these guys here for several years now and have never failed to get a good harvest!

Organic seeds produced in the Highlands of Scotland.
