As we look to expand our catalogue it has become more and more obvious that there is a big round leafy hole to fill. So last year we set up a big cabbages trial and inspired by the work they are doing at Solhatt økologiske frø we decided that the majority of the trial was to be made up made up of Norwegian varieties.
Our often wet and windy, cooler maritime climate as well as long summer days are similar to Norway and there are still also some old, well adapted, varieties remaining across the north sea.
By the end of the summer, we had a favourite and in late Autumn we chose one variety to store overwinter, selling the rest to local veg box scheme .
The cabbage heads were stored by hanging them in an old cow shed, they were covered with fleece in very cold weather and throughout the winter, we periodically removed the outer leaves to prevent the heads from rotting.
Finally, last week we planted the heads out where they will eventually produce seeds later in this year. Keep your eyes peeled for a new Norwegian cabbage variety this Autumn!
