The first reference of a castle on this spot, Findlater, was in 1246 (that's 780 years ago). It shape shifted through the years and is now a ruin, but majestically it still clings to the cliff edge.
It's a precarious climb down on a grassy bank, along a spine which then leads you to a broken opening with a floor level visible below.
As you go in your treated to a vista through a window looking out to sea.
It's a view I've gazed at many a time and I've always thought about the individuals who've shared that same framed view..
Hollywood arrived last year...Matt Damon and Co, with their tale of the Odyssey. Findlaters recent fame in connection with the film will no doubt increase footfall and potentially leave it in a more ruinous state - it's unstable in places and in my opinion, is a vulnerable monument of our history.
I hope the councils that are creating walking maps and advertising the links to filming venues have an eye on the actual impact on the sites..Hopefully it doesn't end up fenced off due to damage or injury (to the castle or people)
If you visit Findlater, I encourage you to take a look at it's history, ponder about who was there, what did they see and how lucky we are to still be able to share that thought. And if you see someone destroying it with graffiti etc speak up if you feel safe to do so..
