Just before dark we got our North Country Cheviot tup lambs (park) in and selected a bunch for producing for 2027 shows and sales

It’s always hard to tell how anything is going to grow given they are gangly youngsters just now but you have to go with your gut. What’s most important to us, apart from the basics, is correct ears, smart eye and a real presence about them.

Anyway we will see how this lot grow out. Always exciting in any event especially when you have bred them yourselves

Morning folks. Working away here sorting through our store lambs 🐑 this week.

We really need to push on to get through the commercial ewes- separating them into what’s going to the tup and what is not fit to. Those that are going to the tup will then be sorted into smaller bunches depending on whether they are going to the Suffolk, texel, Cheviot or beltex. We also have footvax boosters to do, wormers ….. the list goes on.

Hoping to make a start to this at the weekend. Getting the ground worked 🌾at is a priority just now.

It was a tremendous trade at United Auctions - Livestock Auctioneers in Stirling with some English store lamb buyers up helping push the 💴 on. We sold to a top of £139p/h with an average of £132p/h

Jo here 👋 For the horse lovers out there, I have followed with great joy all the action at or the last few days. Welldone to everyone involved- what talent.

Before I had the kids, horses 🐴 (and of course Andy) were everything to me. I became obsessed with all things equestrian from a really young age, and although I wasn’t the bravest of riders, I tried my best.

Being honest, I loved turning the horses out and working behind the scenes as part of a team, possibly more than riding in the ring. However life got very busy once I was married, had the kids and the farm. I never wanted to do the horses half hearted so took the decision to pour my efforts into my family and farm. I don’t regret it at all but do miss it at times.

I’m so glad I had the opportunities I did though - meeting great people, working with great horses, travelling, learning to be disciplined and work hard- all beyond character building. Those skills provided me with the foundation to work the farm, run the business and show our livestock. I will always be grateful to everyone who came on that journey 🐎 with me 🥰 supporting me through thick and thin.

We received an exciting delivery this weekend….. some lovely poults. They have already settled well and the other hens have generally been tolerant of the new kids on the block. The majority are copper black leghorns which should, in time, produce lovely brown eggs. The main issue is getting them inside to roost as opposed to trying to fly up the trees ! 🌳

We use vegetables (brassicas like broccoli) and potatoes as a natural break in our cereal rotation. It’s a great way to naturally stop disease lifecycles (which can occur if you continually grow the same cereal in the same soil), aerate the soil and supercharge the soil with nutrients.

The broccoli has been harvested from this part of the field and it’s now going into winter wheat (hopefully). First job is to shred down the aftermath so it’s easier to work with and for the soil to digest. Brassicas have huge stems and roots so it creates real problems if we were simply to skip this step and just plough the field.

Yes, this takes alot of time and costs more but taking shortcuts will not benefit the land, our pocket nor the food produced.
