This frame of pollen is just a little sample of the variety of different flowers that our honeybees have been on this spring. Each colour is a different type of pollen. The bees will visit flowers over a million times to make a single jar of honey. If you added up the total flight distance they cover in the process it would take you all the way around the world. It takes 12 bees a lifetime to make just one miraculous teaspoon of honey.

NEW DATE for Lindores' Bee Day! 🐝

On Saturday 27th June, we're celebrating bees here at Lindores Abbey!

Did you know that monks and monasteries are considered the pioneers of modern beekeeping? Long before traditional hives came into use in the 19th century, monks kept wild bees in skeps, small woven baskets, harvesting honey to sweeten food, brew mead and make beeswax candles to light their churches. Beekeeping wasn't just a craft, it was essential to monastic life.

Join local beekeeper Keith Taylor of in our Courtyard for an educational talk on the art of beekeeping and the vital role bees play in our world. Keith will also be sampling some of his wonderful local honey, available to purchase on the day, along with beautiful beeswax candles. 🍯

Running alongside this, our History Tours will include a very special one-off addition — the tales of medieval beekeeping! A rare experience you won't want to miss!

It doesn’t quite feel like summer yet but the bees will be very aware of the lengthening days. I am not sure if they will appreciate this stained glass Letham apiary that I made from an old hive frame. I think I will leave it here to catch the sunlight instead. Huge thanks to for the very patient tuition.

As well as being the patron saint of love, St Valentine is also the patron saint of beekeepers. Not only that, but he also covers fainting, epilepsy and the plague in his job description. Perhaps he is aided by the fact that at least three different people are thought to have been canonised under this name. As to the connection between honeybees and love? Well there are many, but perhaps the most obvious is that the surest way to your loved one’s heart isn’t flowers, chocolate or champagne. It is a jar of local, natural honey. What could possibly be sweeter than that? ❤️🐝🍯
