Delighted to be contributing to this vital project. It is so important that as an industry we understand fully where our climate impact lies so the we can defend what we do but also realise the opportunities to do better. Also great to see this level of collaboration across the UK.

🌱 Scottish Climate Week: looking across Scotland’s farms

Over the past week, we’ve been hearing directly from some of the Scottish farms taking part in the Environmental Baselining Pilot hearing why they got involved, what they hope to learn and why having a clearer picture of their farm’s environmental performance matters.

The project is bringing together farm-level data on areas including soil carbon, greenhouse gas emissions, carbon stocks, water run-off and wider environmental indicators helping build a more detailed picture of the environmental contribution of Scottish agriculture.

📍 35 farms across Scotland are involved in the wider pilot, including 22 beef, lamb and pork farms, representing different farming systems, soils and landscapes.

This work is about establishing a robust baseline understanding where farms are today so that the industry can better understand what is working, identify opportunities and track change over time.

There are times when you nearly miss a moment and today was one of them.

At this time of year, we often have cows that we sell cull. These are cows that have been with us for a number of years but sadly though (mostly) age have come to their end of their breeding lives with us. We don't put them through Macbeth's as they don't fit in with what we are trying to do so we sell them to folk for which they are more suitable.

It is always a bit of a sad moment as they have nearly always done well by us and hopefully we have done well by them. And whilst they don't fit our spec for the butchers shop, they are still a source of healthy red meat.

However there was extra significance to these girls though as they were the last of the cows that we inherited from Mum and Dad. These girls have been with us since the beginning and left us in the manner in which they have been with us throughout that time; no fuss or drama. Good cows who always reared a calf. And I didn't even get a photo of them before they left. They have been through the changes that have made on the farm, adapted to them and t.

From here on in, everything really is a result of our own choices but we couldn't have asked for a better starting point.

🌟 This post is about cakes - not grass or cows

I've added a new cake to the Wee Shed Shop - Raspberry Cream Lamingtons.

Its a light sponge, soaked with a vanilla cream then covered in raspberry jam and coconut. The result is kind of like an outside in snowball.

A bit of a labour of love but hopwfully worth it.
Available this weekend in the fridge! Other cakes available too - including Millionaire slice.
