A big thank you to TanikaBen Butler, Lincoln and Isla for the skill, care and countless hours spent preparing, training, and showing Blasta Mhor Highland Cattle’s two young Aussie heifers, Cait and Maggie, at the Victorian Highland Breeders Group State Show.

While neither heifer forms part of our long-term breeding program at Blasta Mhor Glenquarry, we’re delighted with their results — both performed exceptionally, with Maggie taking out Junior Champion Female and Cait, Reserve Senior Female Champion.

Our Glenquarry breeding program is focused on establishing first-generation Scottish Highland cattle — the direct offspring of embryos and semen imported from Scotland — to maintain true, pedigree-verified Highland genetics. This approach aligns with both the Australian and UK Highland Cattle Societies’ shared mission to preserve and promote the breed’s original heritage and type.

A wonderful outcome and an encouraging sign that we’re on the right track. 🐮🏆

🟠 Why 100% Scottish Highland Genetics Matter 🟠

Preserving Highland cattle starts with pure, pedigree-verified genetics.

To maintain key traits - locomotion, pelvic capacity, fleshing ability, temperament, skin, and hardiness - both sire and dam must be true Highland. While direct Scottish imports offer excellent genetic diversity, animals bred internationally can drift from type if breeders don’t consistently select for traditional features.

This drift can lead to:
🔸 Loss of breed consistency
🔸 Weaker conformation and hardiness
🔸 Spread of genetic issues like NT821, crop ear, and dwarfism

✅ At Blasta Mhor, all bulls and donor females are tested NT821-negative and are free from crop ear and dwarfism before use.

We breed for:
✔️ Wide dossan
✔️ Short head
✔️ Deep rib
✔️“A mouth like a shovel and a tongue like a scythe”
✔️ Sickle-shaped hind leg angulation - supporting pelvic absorption and longevity (not a straight leg and high tail head)

A strong maternal base is essential. Even the best bull can’t fix poor-quality cows. Using pure semen over diluted or off-type females risks further loss of breed integrity — and using semen from a direct descendant with an internationally bred dam can compound that risk if the dam’s lineage has drifted from traditional Highland type.

DNA testing and strict adherence to breed standards are the foundation for preserving Highland heritage.

🌍 Blasta Mhor proudly exports 100% Scottish Highland genetics worldwide - supporting breeders who value purity, consistency, and true Highland type.
