I’d have to have this little one in the house… I’d cry daily seeing this! Our last group were pretty rough but this is so sad.

This video will always be so special to us — our very first hatchling 🐣💛

You can hear me in the background, sniffling and sobbing… completely overwhelmed by the whole process.

These eggs were actually in Mam’s bedroom at the time, and this little one made her appearance late on a Wednesday night. We even woke both children so they could see the first hatch — one was fascinated, the other not so much (if you know, you know 😂😂).

We swapped rooms because I thought I’d be more likely to sleep through the noise… but nope, I barely slept at all! Between the constant cheeping and the banging from the other eggs, I was convinced I’d wake up to five or six chicks — but nope, just this one very loud, very determined little lady. The amount of noise she made was unbelievable!

The others followed slowly but surely over the next day, and we ended up with 8 out of 9 hatching — not bad at all for a first attempt. I remember being told by a breeder that hatching is a bit like playing tennis — the more you practise, the better you get at it. She also told us how to configure the incubators which was a huge advantage 😁.

🌟 Meet Liam, Our Volunteer Apprentice 🌟

Liam’s mum, Clare, first contacted us back in January to ask about voluntary work for his Duke of Edinburgh award — and we’re pleased she did!

At just 14 years old, Liam already has a clear goal: to work in animal conservation once he finishes school. It’s been a pleasure to be a small part of that journey.

The jobs here aren’t always glamorous — cleaning waterers, topping up feeders, and mucking out coops — but Liam has shown up week after week with enthusiasm and dedication, taking on every task with a positive attitude.

His help has been massively appreciated, and we’ll truly miss him after his final session next week.

Thank you, Liam — it’s been a pleasure having you with us, and we wish you all the very best for the future! 🐓💚

The joys of free ranging 😂🙈

We reckon we’re losing around 15–20 eggs a day at the moment, thanks to our cheeky girls playing hide and seek! 🥚🐓

With the recent weather of sun and rain, the grass is growing by the hour and we fear we’re fighting a losing battle… This was the THIRD hidden nest we’ve found this week, and unfortunately all the eggs have to be discarded 😩 Talk about painful!!

Broody hen number 4…

Anyone who follows us will know we keep predominantly purebred Brahmas… so broodiness is just part of life and something we’ve had to get used to 🤣

Alongside them we’ve got our laying girls – Warrens, Lohmann Browns, Leghorns and a few others. These types are bred for egg production, so they’re much less likely to go broody – they’re far more interested in laying than sitting!

That said… last year it was Winifred our Rhode Rock, and this time it’s our Bluebell’s turn 🙈

We really didn’t want any more broodies this year, but she has been so persistent we just couldn’t break her. In the end, a couple of days ago we gave her some fertilised eggs that were already on day 18 so she didn’t have to sit for too much longer.

She’s had a bit of a rough moult as well, so we couldn’t risk her losing any more condition by keeping her on the nest for weeks.

The 3 chicks arrived overnight and so far she seems to be doing a wonderful job.

Now the focus is on building her back up – plenty of good food, rest, and letting her do what she clearly wanted to do all along 💛

Martha paid us a little visit yesterday morning 🐔💛

She’s been a bit under the weather the last couple of days with a touch of the sniffles — most likely thanks to this wild weather swing (from last week’s downpours to 30+ degrees!).

She wandered up to the house, staring at us through the gates seeking human attention. She had a 10-minute pamper session… a little snack, a gentle cool-off for her toes in the pool, and some extra TLC.

Off she tootled back to her coop hopefully feeling a little cooler🏡✨
